Seems a bit of a shame with them having been there so long but I guess people have a right to go about their business whilst surrounded by unblemished rock faces and cave walls.

I'm still fairly bereft of pet hates. I guess one is the idea of graffiti as art, rather than vandalism.

I'm rather partial to a vandalised bus shelter, actually.

When I was at school the back 2 benches in the biology lab were a masterpiece of graffiti, much of it obscene. The school is still there but I doubt the benches are, no doubt slung in a skip so as not to offend the sensibilities of contemporary 'students' as they seem to be called now. In my day you were a 'schoolboy' or just a 'boy' and a student was someone over 18 and at University, probably with long hair and a kaftan.

A pity about the benches, though, since they provided a welcome distraction from the misery of last period on a Wednesday biology class and would put the crap you see hung in the Tate Modern to shame.

When I visited Cuba many years ago, I knew of some cave paintings which I wanted to see. The location was mentioned in my guide book so I asked a taxi driver to take me there. After many wrong turns and frequent calls back to the taxi HQ for advice eventually we got there. The paintings were deep within the cave so one need a torch to view them, but the taxi driver who until then was unaware of their existence (and probably thought he had a 'right nutter' as a fare) was bowled over to see them and thanked me profusely for pointing them out to him. Made my day!.

I won't tell you then of the trouble I had to go to to get to see a particular stupa (a Buddhist monument) in Laos. Or of the difficulty I had in leaving Albania, or of crossing into Guatamala from Honduras.
