And I've deliberately avoided involving myself in the evolution of 'the machine' as far as is possible. Part of the old hippie doctrine (or lack of).

Well yes, we all have to live with things as they are - and I guess you are right in that we helped create the world we live in simply by being there while it happened, but a lot of 'decent' folk will feel they were just behaving themselves most of the time. In general I think posters are looking to explain things rather than blame anything or anyone... That's how I see it anyway.

Must have been confusing it with the World Cup.

Come to think of it that was the one where we didn't qualify but the Jocks did.

Just more proof of how the world has changed so radically.

Anyway my point is you could take someone in a time machine from 1920 to 1977 (ahem) and aside from the proliferation of motor vehicles not a lot would have changed in their neighbourhood or the way people lived their lives. Telly excepted, but you had a cinema on very street back in the 1920s so that wouldn't be too much of a shock.

The schools, shops, hospitals, police station and church would all be the same buildings in the same places, possibly manned by the children or grandchildren of the people who manned them in his time.

Whereas now the schools, cop station, hospital and church would all be gone and replaced by blocks of flats and a supermarket, the shops would be houses, and so forth.
