When I was a carpenter, I worked in the dirt, used the Porta-Potty, handled moldy wood, none of it ever bothered me.

But after college I got an office job, and found that I was constantly shaking people’s hands. That made me want to wash my hands constantly. Maybe 4 times a day I’d step into the restroom to wash my hands. Especially after a meeting where we all shook hands.

And it wasn’t just paranoia, people were much sicker in the office than the construction workers I had known before. They send their kids to school, which is a freaking science experiment for germs! The kids come home, give it to their parents, who are sneezing and coughing into their hands, putting their hands to their faces constantly, and their arses, and then shaking your hand. I made an effort to not put my hands to my face, washed my hands often, and it helped keep me from getting sick. Or so it seemed. Then I’d come home and my kid would give me the flu.

In my experience office types get sick more than the builders, but more to do with the fact that the paper clips were getting sick pay for their absences, while the builders only got paid for the days they turned up.

When we were organising going to a motorcycle rally a few years ago, and we had to set off on the Friday morning, most of us would lose a day's pay, while a friend's wife who worked for a big insurance company said "It's ok, I haven't had any sick days yet this year so I'm due one".

In the 44 years I've been in work, my day's off sick probably total about a month, much of it due to falling off my bike. But then we did eat a lot of shit as kids.

Hence why bathroom towels are a prime source for germs, and why it pays to avoid touching those belonging to others. In the office environment you describe, antibacterial hand gel is your friend

That's true. I experienced the same. Working outside in construction for many years, I was rarely afflicted by anything, but as soon as I became an 'office bod', there came an endless succession of colds and flu.

Being outside in the fresh air is always healthier than cooped up in an office. I couldn't imagine now having to deal with the latter, whilst wearing a suit, especially in this heat! Hell on earth....

Well I’m cooped up in an office in this heat and had to bring a jumper in today as it’s bloody freezing in here. Sadly they let idiots who have no idea how air conditioning works control the air conditioning!

Then again, I suppose I shouldn’t moan, as the last summer before they installed the aircon was hell. 28 degrees outside in an upstairs office with a bare metal roof meant that it hit over 40 degrees in here most days. It was the stuffiness that was the worst, though - it was like breathing soup!

Nightmare about the air-con, although it'd have to be *really* freezing before I'd entertain putting on a jumper in July... No such issues here. It's bloody roasting (currently 26°C), in nothing but shorts and a t-shirt!

What you describe happened last summer (I know exactly what you mean about the air, as I've experienced it before), I simply couldn't have coped with, and would've had to have walked out. I doubt in terms of health and safety, it'd even have been legal.

Afraid not. There is a legal minimum temperature but no legal maximum.
