I'd renationalise it. Run it at cost plus investment, cut out the shareholders. Senior management all on 2 year fixed term contracts so you can get rid of the useless ones at no cost. The bill payers get to vote on the CEO's performance once a year. Less than 50% approval and he's out.

You can't introduce competition to supplying water or power. I'm sure they only privatised water and power in the first place to give pension companies a safe bet.

It really gets me that essential services are in private hands. They should be run by the government and contracted out if need be. At least then some sort of control over charges could be maintained.

What constitutes 'essential services' is another bugbear of mine. A basic government provided option should be offered for things like, legal services, car and other insurances and house sales, for instance. If you want to go private do so, but there should be state run alternatives.

I wish governments would work out that these false markets don't work. I have nothing against competition - but it is only one of a number of solutions to a problem.

Artificially creating a market doesn't work. There is one water mains network, one telephone network, one electricity supply network, and one gas supply network. It does not make sense to trying to add competition to these markets because a supplier isn't going to offer an alternative product - its the same service delivered over the same medium.

If alternative products can be delivered independently by a number of suppliers - then a competitive market makes sense and should be encouraged (and regulated to avoid dominance by cartels or monopolies). Where this isn't the case, then don't create artificial markets and pretend that the result is a competitive market place.

Didn't they try this sort of thing in Russia, as I remember it didn't end well.

They've tried a lot of things in Russia and none of them ever ended well for them. Except WW2 an even that looked iffy for a while.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

To the original question - people who open their car doors into the side of your car, and don't bat an eyelid, never mind not apologising. Complete lack of respect.

...and, people who write on record sleeves and labels. A bit of wear and tear is part of the charm but it puts me right off to find someone's name or random doodling
