The way I see it you have to decide whether local authorities are hopelessly incompetent or bent as a nine bob note. Since no organization can possibly be so utterly and so permanently incompetent you have to figure they are on the fiddle. I reckon corruption in local government is at Nigerian levels. They know it but they daren't do anything about it because they would uncover a mountain of it going back years and it would destroy the credibility of our whole system of government.

I think you'd be surprised. After nearly forty years serving local authorities directly and indirectly in Highway Engineering, I have to say I saw little evidence of it. No doubt it occurs, as with everywhere else I expect, but it will be on a very minor scale.

The level of bentness is going to vary I suppose. I know that round here there is a lot of it. I'm not talking bout the ordinary workers here mind, only top bosses and the councillors. The ordinary working man rarely if ever gets to wet his beak.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

An internet connection that either works or doesn't, not sort of half working, making you think it's actually doing something only to come up with an error message five minutes later.

Councils!...Bent as a nine bob note!! Another one of my pet hates along with the Council Tax...just the poll tax given another name and a punitive system of taxation

Macca summed it up with "Nigerian Levels". They just have a British way of dressing it up with green and pleasant land/ stiff upper lip propaganda. This country is as corrupt as the best of them

On a lighter note, anything that goes on a bathroom shelf. It will be specifically designed to fall over at the slightest provocation. I have only to reach out for my sponge to have an avalanche of shampoo bottles, toothbrush holders, back scrubbers and assorted cosmetics containers bombard my nether regions.
