Me neither, *if* there is no other option. I simply can't get my head around doing it deliberately, to save £2 (or whatever) on your water bill, when you can easily afford it. Each to his or her own, but being a generous person by nature, I simply can't relate to the skinflint mentality.

I once saw this C5 benefits programme about people who used to have good jobs but had fallen on hard times. One of these people, a young woman, had the bright idea of using her local gym for her ablutions. Membership was only £12 per month (she had off peak membership as she could go whenever she wanted). Every day she would go to train or swim, and shower there afterwards. All for a cost of 40p per day.
Yup, but that's a totally different set of circumstances, where you're doing what you have to do to survive. Like you say, respect for her lateral thinking!

I don't think that makes you a germophobe John, it seems entirely reasonable to me. There are some nasty things around. Hepatitis viruses can live on surfaces for weeks, and who wants a knackered liver? I also use a sleeve when leaving a public toilet, and use my foot to raise/lower toilet seats.

A few years ago we went to a Rock 'n' Blues festival in Derbyshire, organised by Outlaws MC, and one of the toilets was a 3 metre wide pit surrounded by a ring of urinals. One evening I saw 3 grown men frolicking in this pit, and sat in about 12" of undiluted piss pretending to take a bath. This too fell below the standard I considered acceptable. I don't know if they suffered any ill effects from this, but I felt ill just watching them. And I'm betting they slept alone that night.
I just dropped in, to see what condition my condition was in

So how do you flush the toilet after using it?

Do you then use the seat, or do what a friend of mine does: he squats over the seat to do his business?

How do you operate the soap dispensers, or the tap (if the latter does not have a movement sensor)?

None of that is an issue, Barry. You avoid what you can avoid, and what you can't help touching, afterwards you wash your hands thoroughly (normally these days there is an electronic hand-drier in public rest rooms), so there's no need to handle some manky towel, and then apply some antiseptic hand-wash to your hands afterwards.

What steps do you take, when out and about, to maintain good hygiene standards?

after working on many building sites, you do get hardened to dirty toilets, but also become intent to keep your own in decent nick.
a little dirt generally wont hurt u, but try and avoid what its easy to avoid. cold, and flu virus germs, salmonella etc can often be avoided by being careful. nothing is guaranteed tho. no point in getting paranoid over it

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

I cover my hand with my sleeve. But that's difficult at the moment while it's hot and I only wear short sleeves, so I have to just make minimal contact and then wash my hands.
