No, you find your interpretation of what I say very offensive. Your interpretation of what I say and what I am actually saying are very different, but because what I say doesn't exactly conform to what you believe you think you can get on your moral high horse. In fact you enjoy getting on it, hence you are happy to jump to wrong conclusions in order to do so.

From your link: 'An "addictive personality" is a colloquial or informal term'

Like I said, it is just something somebody made up.

It actually demeans people who do have legitimate illnesses. It is not dissimilar to people joking about being OCD because they have their records in alphabetical order. That is nothing like real OCD which is a living hell.

Come on, you can do better than that. Read who wrote the article and what it outlines in more depth, rather than superficially cherry-picking bits, which you consider back up your deeply-ingrained belief system!

    Excerpt...
Addiction is defined by scholars as “a reliance on a substance or behavior that the individual has little power to resist.” Substance-based addictions are those based upon the release of dopamine in the brain, upon which the range of sensations produced by the euphoric event in the brain changes the brain’s immediate behavior, causing more susceptibility for future addictions. Behavior-based addictions, on the other hand, are those that are not linked to neurological behavior as much and are thus thought to be linked to personality traits; it is this type of addiction that combines a behavior with a mental state and the repeated routine is therefore associated with the mental state.[19]

Alan R. Lang, a psychology professor at Florida State University, wrote in a study that the continuing search for the personality traits that play a part in the development of addictions are important for the broader fight against addiction.[1] Identifying the different personality traits will help in the long term when it comes to the treatment of addiction, the strategies to intervene, and how to break the pattern of addiction.[20] With addictive tragedies becoming prevalent in communities around the United States, scientists are asking questions about the aspects of psychological makeup and how they contribute to addiction.[1] They also want to know if there are common threads that are in all addictions, from hard drugs to cigarettes and from gambling to overeating.[1] Through the information that already exists on the personality's role in addictions, with a lot of emphasis on drugs and alcohol, a study from the National Academy of Sciences says that there is no single set of psychological characteristics that pertain to all addictions.[1] The study did show, however, that there are common elements between all addictions.[1]

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Surely there are degrees of OCD-like behaviour, on a range from being (what some might regard as) excessively tidy to 'a living hell'. There's a similar range for addictive behaviour/tendencies; from someone who can't stop themselves eating a whole tube of Pringles, to someone who has become physically addicted to heroin or alcohol. Indeed, almost all brain-related conditions, such as autism, are on a spectrum, and can be diagnosed and treated accordingly. You are being simplistic in imposing a strict impermeable barrier between people with tendencies towards certain conditions but who live 'normal' lives, and those with a 'real' mental illness.
