Kids these days seem incapable of making their own entertainment - all their toys seem designed to keep them indoors. The only way to get them out of the house is to fork out for after school clubs, for football, swimming or whatever. And the adults often have some involvement, including picking up and dropping off, and it's not enough for the little tykes to do this stuff, the parents have to stay and watch.
We always did our own thing as kids. Building dams, fishing, nicking apples, building rope swings, climbing trees, in fact climbing anything that had a bit of height to it. Digging holes and tunnels for no other reason but to see how deep we could go. Bad one that, my eleven year old friend died when one of these tunnels collapsed.
And we had an arsenal of weapons that would horrify most parents today. GAT pistols, Milbro catapults, throwing arrows, arrows which had knife blades tied to the ends and shot from catapults, Cack-sticks (blob of wet clay stuck on the end of a bamboo cane, which could be slingshot for miles, not very accurate but hurt like buggery if one hit you). And netting staples fired from elastic bands. Got one of them in the back of my head once-made my eyes water a bit.
And fires. lots of fires. I once set fire to an entire hillside and the Fire Brigade had to come and put it out. I got a right pasting for that one.
All this stuff looks a bit feral and probably was, but I think I turned out quite normal.
Of course these things were largely possible because where we lived was semi-rural. I feel sorry for kids growing up in towns and cities, I don't know what the answer is there.
