Two things are beginning to really bug me but I had better learn to be calm about them because they wont change.

    1) The constant raising of inflections with just about everything they say. The mundane chat that they think is highlighted or makes them more interesting with a raised ending....save it for a eureka invention moment when it is actually important!

    2) saying "Enjoy" when they hand you a plate of food. Have they served it not for me to enjoy. It goes without saying but they say it in that twee way that makes them feel they are doing their job. I would rather hear something more substantial to break the ice.....I hate small talk

I will let them know if I dont enjoy it....its almost like an instruction

Just as annoying as supermarket check-out staff saying a disinterested 'have a nice day'! We have the yanks to thank for this kind of insincere crap!!
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

Keen supermarket checkout staff calling me 'sir'. Nothing worse than being overly enthusiastic in a crappy job. That's another American thing I suppose. Do the job properly, yes, but no bullshit, thanks.

I often get addressed as 'Sir' in shops if I'm wearing a tie, or a suit. If school pupils do it though, I'm flabbergasted.

What does annoy me however is being asked "How are you today?" by shop assistants - it's none of their business. What they should be asking is "How can I help you (Sir)?".

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”
