    Default Stands - 3 v 4 legs

I have a quadraspire stand (mixture of standard and the old reference shelves). These have 4 leg, one at each corner. However shelved with 3 legs seem to get good reviews (fraim, atacama equinox). Is there an advantage of 3 legs over 4? And if there is what would happen if I drilled new holes in my existing shelves in between the 2 back holes to make it possible to use as a 3 legged stand? Or would the wood for each shelf not cope with this?

I haven't seen any wobbly tripods lately.

I have three legged equipment stands and the only difficulty is that the centre rear leg can get in the way of cables - as Chris says though, they are inherently stable.
