My son likes messing about with electronic stuff, kits and the like. He has just sent me the following link...

If anyone can tell just exactly that is supposed to be I would be grateful...

It's 'orrible.
Cant imagine Ipod users going for that.
As for the speakers and the straws, i've no idea, unless its a way of tuning mini reflex ports.
I admit it doesn't look like a serious piece of 'hi-fi' but it does look like something that would be fun to learn about some basic principles (like some of us did with our 50-In-1 Electronics kits when we were kids). Apart from the potentially high voltages
Seen this before-a little battery power amp.As Beechy says, good for someone to learn a little about the basics. The straws thing is to tune the bass output I believe.
Straws for tuning bass? Now I've heard it all!

Yep, shoving straws in your reflex port was a common tweak in the 70's/80's. Never felt the need for it, personally.
I'm not surprised, if anything's going to corrupt the direction and flow of exiting air and cause chuffing, straws are.

Yes,a good tweak for any that have bass-reflex speakers. The length of the port determines the bass response,so you can tune it to your room to a degree by trying different lengths of straw in bunches that fill the port on your speaker.
