Went to see Kamasi Washington and band last night at Manchester academy 2. Turned up at my usual 15 minutes before expected time on stage expecting to push to somewhere near the front only to find it was all seating. Still, we got reasonable seats and enjoyed the show enormously. Amazingly tight band and Washingtons playing was superb, he came across as a nice bloke with a good line in banter between songs. Well recommended.

Off to see George Clinton / parliament / funkadelic in Liverpool tonight. I don't particularly like the venue (02 academy) but my wife got us tickets as a 1 year wedding anniversary so I can't really not go

Went to see Jan Garbarek recently in Edinburgh.

    Hugely disappointed.

I must have seen him 15/20 times over the last 25 years and loved them all.

So, having not seen him for 10 years or so, I was very much looking forward to it.

firstly, the sound was terrible. Trilok Gurtu was playing, and I love what he does, but he played mainly kit and the Bass drum was THE most dominant sound of the evening. Unbelievable !!!
Gurtu himself didnt look happy and at one point was visibly angry toward the side stage.

Garbarek seemed, to me, to just go through the motions. The solos sounded exactly as I remember them from the records and gigs all those years ago.

I left before the end, I couldnt take any more.
And for someone who loves what this artist has done ( and being a Scotsman who paid 30 quid to attend !! ) leaving early would have felt impossible 2 hours earlier.

    Gutted .

David Gilmour at the RAH on Sunday. He's changed a few band members recently but they sounded just great with Mr Screen in the background showing all the classic movie clips to go with the songs. All the old favourites - supreme guitar playing and his voice hasn't changed at all

Went to see Stars of the Lid at The Barbican last Sunday. Totally stunning live set and projection/light show. A string quartet, two guitars and various analogue synths including a monstrous Moog 55 modular synth. I think it was one of the best concerts I have been to so far in my life. Somehow a much more gutsy performance than I have seen before. And the visual aspect made it quite a trip. A link to a taster of their film document of the event. Hope it works.

    Regards

Suzanne Vega at The Queens Hall in Edinburgh last night. Still bouncing now. This lady continues to blow me away.

Goat at Newcastle Riverside last night.

They packed the place out. Hypnotic, pounding, psychedelic wonderfulness.
One of these days... I'm going to cut you into little pieces.
