Back to my classical blog ....

Been playing this a bit the past week or so.
The string symphony and concerto are good and easily accessible.
The organ concerto is a bit of a harder nut to crack. But I'm getting there, and I think the perseverance is worthwhile. It doesn't have the great tunes of Saint-Saens organ symphony, but hell, tunes aren't everything.

    Wowzert.

A stunning performance and recording of Verdi's Requiem from this year's Proms.

Any Mahler fans here who would like to hear a new Mahler symphony?

Joseph (not Karl) Marx - his Herbstsymphonie (Spring Symphony)
    Hugely magnificent, and very Mahlerian.

Hmmm Jerry, i belive Herbst means "autumn" in German.
That does not affect the music of course but perhaps our perception of it?

    So it does.

No, doesn't affect my perception, it's music.

    Pettersson's 7th - A real blockbuster of a symphony
45 minutes long and very varied in mood, from despair to anger to beauty.

Bachs violin concertos with Salvatore Accardo caught my attention, but what really got me going is the Peteris Vasks works! They are really powerful!
Ashkenazy's work on Shostakovich is also really enjoyable.
I'll get back on this later, its kinda difficult to seize the moment necessary to grasp the contents of these works.
I suppose its easier when you have more experience?
Thanks for all the suggestions so far!

Elgar Violin concerto - Russian style!
Igor Oistrakh being one of my favourite soloists I really enjoy this. It's a beautiful reading in quite decent sound.

Haha! Vasks and Shostakovich. Yes, I somehow had the feeling you would respond well to 'modern classical'.

I listened earlier to this album of string quartet music. Sound boring? ..... Just try it.
