Doing a search on Spotify of Beethoven piano sonatas I came across a full set by Maria Grinberg on the Melodiya label.
I'd never heard of her, but Melodiya issuing a full set - from the land where jaw droppingly wonderful pianists are 3 a penny? Must be something of interest.
Well, from the first few notes of Op 110 it was obvious that I was in the presence of a master pianist. Just stunningly right.
She had a hard life - her husband and her father arrested by the Stalinist authorities and murdered as "enemies of the people", losing her conservatory post she occasionally played tympani for an amateur choreography group ... sheesh ... but somehow after a while she regained roles as solo pianist.

This sonata set recorded around 1970. The sonatas I have heard so far (110 & 111) are just wonderful.
Good sq, too.

I liked these a lot. I shall have to revisit Gergiev's efforts.

Top notch performances - blazing brass in Job, and the violin soloist in the Lark is superbly controlled.

I picked up a whole pile of classical LPs yesterday to sell on behalf of charity.
So of course I'm checkin' 'em out.
This one will not be coming up for sale it's staying with me.
The orchestral suite seems rather more interesting than the symphony at first listen.
I do love these old Melodiya recordings.
And another one that's staying.
I've not heard Collins' Sibelius before, and it is very impressive. Listened to the 3rd yesterday.
A very old mono LP - maybe 60+ years old. It looks a bit cloudy and blemished but amazingly it plays near perfectly.
The whole Collins symphony cycle is available on Spotify, but I can't resist keeping this LP!
And this LP will be up for sale.
I got really excited when I first saw it - Nimbus 45rpm LP. But I'm not convinced the music is for me.
Fab sq, though!

More than a bit blown away by this Bruckner 4 ...
The pacing is just spot on, for me. And of course the Berlin Phil are magnificent.

And so on to Muti's Brahms 2, another good'un.

And then Brendel in Schubert's D.664 piano sonata. Clearly articulated perfection. Certainly not the only way to play this music, but it works!

Thanks, David - yeah, I've got the full set of Myaskovsky's symphonies with Svetlanov - many gems lurk therein!
I've never liked Panufnik's music.
But I turned on the car radio a few days ago and was bowled over by the last few minutes of a great piece of music - turned out to be Panufnik's Sinfonia Sacra.
Great piece!

Nino Rota is well known for his film music, but I was muchly impressed by his cello concertos and, especially, his 1st and 2nd symphonies. A definite nobility to the symphonies.

The cello seems to suit his style as well.

Fancied some serious chill-out music, so what better than Gabrieli's sonorous tones echoing into the distance?
