Quite an interesting performance, superbly recorded.
There's an overwhelming sense of gentle melancholy - well, more a lightly whistful sadness - interesting in a way but for me it doesn't sustain itself over the symphony's length. Quite an exciting allegro and end of finale, though.
I prefer the more overt sense of tense brooding grief in the long quiet sections from Neeme Jarvi on Chandos. That's a Desert Island Disc for me.

Lovely stuff. I would normally listen to the 1961 Sutherland/Pritchard (similarly wonderful), but this one has Joan in excellent form and the not inconsiderable asset of Pavarotti - a force of nature as Edgardo.
