Just looking for a Mahler 2 1st movement to settle down with, I skimmed through Fischer, Gergiev, Solti, Abbado, Somone Young, Tennstedt and (to my surprise) settled down with this one ...

Yoiks - Haitink on top form.

Then a craving for Vitali's violin chaconne. Surprisingly few recordings around for this amazing work. I can't abide Heifetz, but came across this.

    -- Stunning.

Which led me on to try a few other albums of Vitali's music. Lots of good stuff around, but this was a major discovery.

-- this has made it to my Desert Island|Disc pile in one giant leap!
The Chaconne is here, but not as good as the previous mentioned - the rest of the music is pure delight in its variety and invention.

    Another excellent Mahler 2

    - perfect Brahms playing? Could be, I thought this was wonderful.

I thought I'd just sample this out of curiosity, liking the cover image! -->

-- but ended up playing the first Partita and Sonata right through. It's very good.

    - Anthony Newman playing the 6 Bach keyboard partitas on a harpsichord, sorry about the small image.
Wow - amazing clackety harpsichord sound ! - different, but I enjoyed it. Very fine performances, too.

    - strangely, I prefer these more obscure works to Arnell's numbered symphonies.
They are all more than worth a listen, though.

The Bruch. OK. Lovely end to the slow movement, but a bit faceless otherwise.

    I tried these ...

... but found them a bit characterless.

    Moved on to this ...

Aaaahhhhh! - That's more like it - some (lots!) of interpretive personality. Real passion for the music from both players.

For all those albums Cecilia has made down the years, exploring all that (mostly unjustly) forgotten music, there's great pleasure to be had in hearing her in a Rossini opera.

^^ Coo, opera. Maybe in my next life?
    ___

    - Symphonies 1 & 3 - I'm slowly beginning to appreciate Bax. Hard work, but I suspect it will be worth it.

    - a beautifully lucid recording.
That was good, so I moved on to ...

Then the Art of Fugue took my fancy, a string quartet transcription seemed to be required. Tried the Juilliard SQ, ...

-- oh dear no, way too slow and turgid
... settled on the Emersons who are not usually my 1st choice, but they hit the mot juste here ... yum ...

    Lovely.

Playing the Op 59/3 quartet from this set

Glorious playing - exquisitely accurate but overflowing with excitement and vivacity.
    --- and it's heart-meltingly beautiful as well.
Best recorded version I've heard, I reckon.

    Fook me, I'm exhausted!

Just now played the 1st mvt of the 2nd symphony from this remastered set ...

Oh My God - air conducting away like a deranged gibbon, this is just mag-fooking-nificent.
The re-master of these old New York Phil recordings has brought them up brand spanking new.
OK, it's a bit left-right-ish, with the cello section neatly tucked into the right hand speaker. But what the hell, this is truly awesome music making.

    NO !!!!

Damn thing has got glitchy and pauses at random.
Went round to Justin's (user211 aka AccuTart ) the other day and his TIDAL was doing the same. So it's not just my setup.

I've moved on to Spotify Premium - and despite the lower bitrate than TIDAL hirez, it sounds just fine in my humble system.
