I'm not a big Britten fan, but the violin concerto is fairly wonderful, especially the 1st movement.

--- but I can't make head nor tail of the Cello Symphony, it just seems to meander aimlessly on and on (and on and on ...). But I know that other folk like it.

--- ah, perfection. The Gran Partita is wonderful, and this is a very fine recording of it. A nice way to end the evening to help the digestion of a Chicken Pathia, Sag Aloo and Peshwari Nan.

    - symphony for orchestra, big band and electric guitar. Tuur is a rock band member as well as modern classical composer.
Hmm. I must confess I gave up after a while.
I like a lot of Tuur's music, though.
    This had preceded it ....

    - yeah, more my sort of thing.

And the perfect way to wind down ....

    I just love this music.

Croatian woman composer - big, no holds barred, late romantic symphony. 47 minutes long! - all of it enjoyable.
    Wiki article about her here

I listened thru it twice - really good. I've some chamber music by our Dora waiting on my TIDAL albums list.

-- a fascinating album by an almost completely unknown English composer. If you know your Schubert piano sonatas you will definitely recognise the sound world!
I've had this album on CD for quite a while and always return to it with pleasure.

Brahms' fourth symphony - Klemperer and the Philharmonia. In training for tomorrow night at Middlesbrough Town Hall, where it is being played by the Dresden Philharmonic. They're doing Finlandia and the Elgar cello concerto as well.

Wow - sounds like a great concert - enjoy!

    ___

A Stanley Bate day, mainly ...

    -- 2 fine piano concertos

    -- 2 fine symphonies

Bate is an excellent composer, well worth investigating. Quite well known in his day (he died aged 47 in 1959) but forgotten after his death, his music now being revived by Dutton.

-- a bit of a surprise this. A series of delightfully tuneful and varied concertante pieces by the famed opera composer.
I've owned this CD for 15 years or so - it gets played 1 or 2 times a year, regular!

    More Bate ...

The 3rd symphony is almost magnificent, I just wish he had returned to the wonderful fanfare-like theme of the 1st movement to round off the finale. That would have been breathtaking! - Ah well, still a very fine work.

    -- very listenable and pleasant.

This was great fun ........ great tunes and very much tongue-in-cheek ....

    Yesterday ...

On IEM headphones with a portable minidisc player in my pocket while digging to set up a new area of lawn, recordings of live performances recorded off the radio years ago of ...
    - Barber cello concerto
    - Kabalevsky violin concerto
    - Korngold violin concerto.
    All good.

Then in front of the Maggie panels ....

and some chamber music by the same guy -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8qYco8VRaE

I have no idea why Rontgen isn't better known - his music is superb!

Another morning's gardening and had another music sesh with these ...
    - Barber cello concerto
    - Kabalevsky violin concerto
    - Korngold violin concerto.
Still good! The Korngold grows in my affections - the slow movement is totally yummy.

Listened to this twice yesterday eve. Italian, contemporary with Respighi.
I've had this CD a while - and I find it difficult to get to grips with.
Pleasantish orchestral, but once over it's forgotten.
Meh. I think I wasted over 2 hours of my life on it yesterday.
