The best Mendelssohn 3rd (Scottish) symphony recording I have come across - very exciting! - superb sq, too.

Punches the air! I love Howells. Nothing better than sitting Gloucester Cathedral listening to his work; those who built such places knew what they were about in regard to acoustics, and so did Howells when writing compositions for such buildings. The music doesn't sound earthly in origin, rather it hangs in the air, numinous.

He did! The Gloucester Service at evensong in Gloucester Cathedral is a wonderful thing and something I haven't done in a few years now - I believe I missed it a few weeks ago.

First Howells I heard was the Hymnus Paradisi (on R3 in 1990 - it left quite an impression!). Ever since I'd wanted to hear the piece at the 3 Choirs festival and was lucky enough to see it at Worcester this year (along with some Finzi and RVW I think). For me, it just wasn't the right venue though and the soloists were completely lost. His church services though...

A weird and fascinating contemporary oboe concerto
The other piece on the album is good, too.

More Purcell songs ripped from a CD I've had for years.
Barbara Bonney singing "Oh, fair Cedaria, hide those eyes" will stop you in your tracks!

I've got the complete Purcell secular and sacred boxed sets by King, must listen to them one day!
