    Slow. Sad. Romantic. Surging. Powerful.
    Quite film-music-like.

Hehehehe... Now this really is directionless! Fun though, in a kind of bonkers way (and very well recorded)... I guess that's *some* form of compensation

Now for something rather more sensible (and also truly stunning, musically and sonically):

    First listen of the day.

Not as marvellous as his 7th symphony but still good.

    Default More Hindemith >>>

    erna.jpg

Recordings of Hindemith's 'Marienleben' [Op.27] are not so plentiful, the best performance is a rather poor live recording of Erna Berger (sop.) and Gerhard Puchelt (p.) made in Berlin on December the 12th, 1953. The bloke responsible for setting the recording levels ought ought have been put up against a wall and disposed of by firing squad for crimes against culture and my ears.

My TDA 1534 NOS DAC with its rolled off highs is out on loan, but this is just the kind of recording where it earns its keep.

I've never even heard of the piece!

Listening now, and it's very good. Who knew? Well, John did.

There are quite a lot of recordings on Spotify.

I'm off and on with Hindemith's stuff, Jerry, but I do love this cycle and another by him called 'Sechs Lieder Nach Gedichten von Freidrich Hölderlin'. I have a version sung by Peter Schreier on Eterna records. Hindemith scored six of the Marienleben for orchestra too.
