Hi Ian, glad to see a mate back on top health wise. I have one of your bearings and count me in the supremely satisfied group :D I see you mentioned having copies of the instructions and I would like...
Does the plumbers putty give a rigid connection between the bearing and the chassis? I would think a solid connection that the wax gives is what gives the improvement.
Has anyone tried the new Poly Metal or Poly Glass mats from KAB? Their products are generally very good.
Just got a Sumiko Blue Point Special EVO III cart. I'll mount that first.
I just got my shipment from KAB. A tonearm damper and a Poly-Metal mat. I also have some wax for the spindle bearing well. For once I'm going to do one mod at a time so I can gauge the effectiveness...
Good job! What you're doing now is the most important part of the painting process. A smart man takes no shortcuts here. I'll save the champaign emoji for when you show us the finished job ;)
Imagine if you will, sanding something made of wood. A table top maybe. Imagine things like transformer hum, platter resonance, tonearm resonances as things you can sand smooth to get a fine...
Here's a link I used when I mounted my PS externally. The thing with a Techie, IMO, is you do a mod and hear an improvement. Then you mod something else and along with the improvement from that, you...
I can dig it.
What you'll need now is patience, patience and more patience. Each time you apply paint or primer, give it a few days to "gas-out" and harden. Maybe even longer with lacquer Then you sand it to prep...
I have absolutely no intention of removing mine (Dynamat Extreme) as it damps the platter so much better than the stock undermat.
Another thing you should consider is peeling off that ill applied factory rubber mat on the underside of your platter and replacing it with a layer of Dynamat Extreme.
Can you post a pic or two of what you've done? With the knowledge base around here, I'd be surprised if someone could not help you get it squared away.
Great looking work, how's the sound? When I did mine it was impossible to do an A-B comparison but I did have a sense of hearing the music "better", if that makes any sense.
Yes, a piano black finish would look awfully nice. Just be aware that every spec of dust within 3 counties will be drawn to your deck
Wow! I wish I had the skills for something like that.
Can you post a few more pics so we can get a look at it from different angles. Very much interested.
Trust me, it's in there tight enough that it's not going to twist. The azimuth isn't going to change unless you forcibly change it. I didn't glue it in place in case I had to adjust it at a later...
I did a search on eBay for "straight tonearm headshell" and found some ones that look like this....
First off, the stock tonearm tube on the Techie is very resonant. Having it well damped can only improve it. However, it can be taken to the next level :eyebrows:
On the CF/aluminum tube arm...
I don't have any issues with jumping/skipping on bassy passages but I would like to check it to know it's current resonant frequency. Where would I get such a test record?
Guys, please pardon us...
Well, I'd like to say I did that
The aluminum/carbon fiber tonearm tube is both lighter and less resonant. Is that a good thing? My cart is an AT120e and I had to add a 2g weight...
Do give that mod some serious thought. I did it to my deck (along with better tonearm wire) and it was a very nice improvement. When completed, the arm is lighter and better balanced because the...
For myself, not at the level that Khom is working at :stalks:
Don't you all laugh at once :D
...
How is it? Thinking of upgrading my current cart sometime between now and Spring.
