If you google "spotify peer to peer", there's a load of info. Wikipedia says that it uses p2p to supplement their available bandwidth.

If you go to settings, you can switch off sharing. I've unticked everything.

I have 0.8.8.450 on my core 2 duo 3ghz with 4gb and 20 meg Internet.

CPU is around 3% when playing music.
