I've opted for Mikmas's Beresford 7520 which looks like it has plenty of scope for modding - might try the opamp bypass. Thanks for the other input and advice.

Yes the cheaper end of vintage is where I've been for a few years. As I'm sure you know, it's stunning the 'bang per buck' sound quality you can get with older gear that's still very serviceable.
