When it comes to digital amps, two things pop up into my mind :

1. Class D amps
PWM chip-based amplifiers with analog inputs, that still allow us to use them with our own standalone DAcs....

As for me, it will be the old chrome bumper Naim 32.5/110 amp combo. Cheap. Reliable. Sounds great.
It's everything that you wanted in an amp.

I'm currently using RPi2 with Digi+.

If I upgrade the Digi+ to DigiOne (hope it's a real upgrade)
Would I be better off staying with the RPi2 or 'upgrade' also to either RPi3 or RPiZero ?

As a person who regularly flips between Win & Mac machines.

I'd say that perhaps for a start you might want to settle with either :

Win - Foobar (KS/Wasapi/Asio depending on your pref)

The very reason it worked OK with PicorePlay probably due to the small PCP image size.

I got the HiFiBerry Digi+ too. (with the Output Trafo)
Connected to either the CaimanII+ or 326 FDA, everything just sounds great.

The 326 FDA is oh-so clean sounding and its clarity is...

Yep..Toslink hits harder. Deeper bass and pronounced HF.
But Coax just sounds more natural, more musical.
