where can we buy this stuff for the best price?
where can we buy this stuff for the best price?
Hi Ali,
I got my Pi with 'Ninja' Pibow case and PSU, from here:http://shop.pimoroni.com/collections/raspberry-pi-2
I believe that the DAC is available direct from IQ-Audio, through Gordon there, or here: http://www.tindie.com/products/IQaud...ac_prod_search
All the rest you can get from Maplins, then simply download Volumio on your computer and set it all up - job's a good 'un! :)
Marco.
Could we have a straight forward description of how to put one of these things together? I'm currently using a squeezebox SB3 butt finding it a little unsatisfying. Given the price that SB3s go for on EBay, I could swap over for virtually no outlay.
The SB3 accesses a little Linux PC attached to the router which runs the Slimserver software that it needs, and has a 400gb hard drive attached. Presumably the Pi would be able to access the same library, but does it need to have any software running elsewhere on the network? If so, could an Android tablet handle the task?
I'm intrigued, but ignorant!

Then plug your HD in (or whatever), a HDMI Touch screen, plug it in to your pre (or amp) and your rolling... (as far as I can see but might be wrong so awaiting correction.)
Yes, Jo, that's correct, but the HiFi Berry is a different DAC, and arguably not as good as the IQ-Audio... Also, you don't need the facility on the HiFi Berry of connecting up an off-board DAC, if you're going to use the IQ one directly, fitted to the Pi, directly again into a power amp, minus a preamp, as I'm doing.
The IQ-Audio Pi-DAC+ outputs 2V, the same as most CDPs, so there's no need, electrically, for a preamp - and interestingly, for me for the FIRST time ever, no need for one SONICALLY, either! Just use the Volumio interface, on your phone, tablet or laptop, and you're away! :)
Sensitive power amps, however, are best for optimal results (in order to get the same drive and 'balls' in the sound, as provided by a good active preamp).
Marco.
Hi Shane,
I'll ask Duncan to contribute and outline the process in layman's terms.
Meanwhile, there are two very good threads on the subject. One on Wigwam: http://www.hifiwigwam.com/showthread...r-Raspberry-Pi and one on TAS, although Martin T and others have gone the HiFi Berry route: http://theaudiostandard.net/thread/5...reamer-project
Have a read and see if they help :)
Marco.
It might also be worth mentioning for those who have a fear of Linux (but with Volumio there is nothing to fear), that Microsoft have committed to building a version of Windows 10, which will run on the Raspberry Pi 2 and it'll be free.

There is quite an extensive thread about the Raspberry as a streamer / DAC at theaudiostandard. The software on the Raspberry is Volumio (https://volumio.org) which is free. I use a DAC from audiophonics.fr. I see now that it is a newer version than the one I have and it seems to be compatible with the B+ and newer Pi2 Raspberry models.
It is interfaced via I2S to the Raspi. Basically, you just stick it on the Raspbi.
One interesting DAC I would like to try one day is this one from Torsten Tjekel which can stacked as a "double mono" configuration. It can be bought here
The Raspi + DAC + Volumio kit conveniently replaces a streamer an Airport express and a DAC for peanuts. It is quite an eye (ear) opener.
Hope this helps

PS The Raspberry can be interfaced to your router either with an Ethernet cable or with a WIFI dongle like this one I cannot hear any difference between the two methods and the WIFI is rock solid. Haven't had a single drop out.
