Cant sleep so The Admirable Crighton (1957) stars Kenneth More as the Butler who can do anything, even on a desert island.

Winter in Wartime from 2008. This is a Dutch ww2 war film about a teenage Dutch boy, named Michiel van Beusekom, who tries to assist the Dutch resistance during World War II by helping a British airman stay out of German hands during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands

Yes I agree that is the best one, although like all Dickens the plot is just a shaggy dog story.
Re 'The Admirable Crichton' I've never seen it but I guess it is the inspiration for Kryton from Red Dwarf?

Love it or hate it, once seen you can't ignore it.
A real David Lynch/Kubrick feel to it.

A morality tale and comment on human nature dressed up in a visually stunning, visceral and gripping assault on the senses would about cover it?
One of those films that reminds you that Cinema can still shock.
Literally watched certain scenes thinking 'no way did that just happen'.
Soundtrack is stunning Neil, (Same guy who did Solaris, Traffic and Drive) and part of the whole experience.
Play it loud. :)
