 No it's a Larg 'Argyll' unit..

OK, it just rang a bell...sure fidelity used to use the Argyll name as well....used to love those old radiograms. often had decent valve amps in as well..and we used to fling them in the bin...doh!
-
Yeh but it's not a radiogram. you bought the unit cut holes for what ever gear you want to mount.

Oh, so that's what it's for, I did wonder. The missus will be pleased
-
My missus has said she's worried shell come in one day to find me shagging a speaker or something, so they could be multipurpose ha ha!
@Grant, that's a fair point mate.
Have you ever dabbled in upgrading some of the smps units you've got there to linear versions? Relatively small outlay for some real benefits to the sound :eyebrows:

you can see my SMPS ???:eyebrows: ...now thats going some.....
but to answer your question; yes, and no...I would probably like to but think the research and possibly cost might be beyond me....the Beresford dac would certainly benefit, as would the dino downstairs.....not sure if it is feasable to do summat about the laptop ps....I get some internal signal noise through the valve amp when the laptop is plugged in...something I dont get with solid state amps....it is coming through the m2tech dac line.. so am having to use the battery.it is not noticable when the music is on mind but now I know it is there, I am paranoid about it...lol
-
Did I say I'm finished.....well, I accidentally bought this.....oops.

I have recently had couple of these amps, very nice indeed, what are your thoughts.
-
well, just got it but seems well built and sounds superb. As good as I have heard tbh....all Japanese audiophile grade parts I am led to believe so as this one has a 240/220 dropdown tx with it I am hoping it will be a long term keeper.
I still love my Audioromy though so I will need to find a place for it somewhere.
-
as an update I have sold the audioromy and bought a Nakamichi CA5 pre. This was for the Yaqin originally, to turn it into a power amp but it never got past the main system test, as the phono stage is so good it is now being used just for that. Maybe a bit of a waste but it sounds so good that is where it will stay.
will post a pic later.
-
Going back ter o/p you will never be finished
-
Well, think we all knew that would never be:lol: .....I managed to give up fags easily, but this it difficult. Yhink there should be help on the National health.:smoking:

Been a lot of changes to my studio and is nearly ready for testing.

weighs a ton but is in nice condition. Excuse the pun.
Oh and I have finally finished building the variac.
just needs a knob.

I have used the mains conditioner upstairs with system 2 and it has made a difference....the bass is deffo tighter and more controlled etc.......only tried it with the cd player through the Beresford dac so far but will try the pc tomorrow...I hope for improvements there but have to wait and see...It runs nice and quiet I might add....
-
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but how do you find the 21L's?
Nigel.

Switch-mode power supplies (such as those used in computers) are notorious for causing audio interference. They work at high frequency, (usually 25 KHz or above). Spikes and residues from this often find their way through to audio circuits. Possibly the best answer would be to get hold of an old Thandar bench power supply (with conventional series regulator) to charge your laptop.
I would also add that sound cards in computers often leave a lot to be desired. I thought my iPod sounded good until I listened to it through my Pioneer A-400 and Quad 11L's.

Hi Nigel...i love the 21l s in the main system they have a very luxurious tone and if fed right are surprisingly well controlled. My 21s are the mk1 versions which i think to be better than the newer version..often the case.
With the pc upstairs that had the noise...i actually changed the amp to a yaqin and have now fitted a bt mains conditioner and all noise has gone and the timbre improved dramatically..I also have another pair of speakers coming to upgrade the ms10 s to q acoustics..
-
Got the q acoustics into my system today and they work really well with the yaqin amp...look great too and barely a mark on them...one of my better baybuys:)
-
-
How are they sounding now they've had a little time to settle in Grant.
-
Had them on all afternoon Brian, and they were sounding so good I think I'll have to start calling this one my no 1 system.....the wife and nurse would not let me put it of..lol
surprising what you can pick up cheaply on ebay on ocasion...nice guy that sold them too.....had the glove and bungs etc with them

I believe the L series was originally designed and built for Quad by Spendor in the UK, presumably using parts sourced from elsewhere. Current production is in China. I don't know if this explains anything, but I am happy with my original L's! :)
Nigel.

I think you are spot on Nigel.
I still get or got a little bass boom from the rear ports partly because of their design and part because of position so I layed my hands on my grandkids baby sponge (a new one that never got used) cut it in two and inserted them where the sun never shone:D

Worked wonders
-
-
Judging from the location of your gap I'm saying its an amp.
Do tell Grant.
-
Yes its a power amp. Going to use it with the integrated to biwire my quads. Tweeters on the integrated and mids on the new Atoll power.
might not work but worth a try. I think they should be compatable
-
Certainly a popular route around these parts at the moment.
Seize the zeitgeist, I'm sure it'll work and if it sounds good it IS good.
-
A good word that.....Raises the bar.
my expensive new speaker cable will have now, to wait a little longer.
-
-
The speaker cable has arrived..now I can set it up
