I've just started Royall Tyler's translation of Heike Monogatari [The Tale of the Heike, Viking 2012] a samurai epic compiled form a variety of sources [pre-14th Century] recounting the Genpei War during which the Heike and Genji clans for fought for control of Japan. The work's central theme is the impermanence of existence and the futility of pride and power. I came to this book after watching Masaki Kobayashi's film 'Kwaidan'[1964], as the third ghost story 'Hoichi the Earless' depicts a part of the Tale of the Heike dealing with the Battle of Dan-no-ura [1185] and the final destruction of the Heike.
