If you are going to pick up an old machine, the only two transports I'd look at are:

CDM 9 Pro
CDM 4/19

Not because they're 'the best' (any swingarm is top class), but because they are the easiest to find spare mechs for. Maybe I shouldn't mention such things! One my my machines uses a CDM 4/11 (with hall motor) and I'm counting the days hehe. Do NOT go for a CDM2-based machine as when they die it's generally game over.

Some machines worth looking at are:

Arcam Alpha 5
Rotel 855
Rotel 955AX
Marantz CD80 (if you can source a spare CDM1 Mk2 mech!)

Marco,

Thanks for posting this list, make it a sticky ?

cheers

Marco

No worries, Peter. It is a sticky :)

Yom, apart from the Philips ones you mention there are also a few Sony transport mechs that are still available for older machines with TDA1541s for modifying.

Mark from Audiocom has the details. Also keep an eye on the next few issues of Hi-fi World magazine - David Price has given Mark a Sony CDP-R1/DAS-R1 for modifying (similar to my own) and will be doing an article on it. It should be very interesting!

I wonder where Mr Price got the idea from - says me knowing that he reads this forum... ;)

Hmmm, that chip may well be highly regarded and I agree it's good when properly implimented because I've listened, but some of those units listed sound awful. I'd never buy several of them.

Marco
18-08-2008, 19:09
Yep, in some cases it's probably best just buying the machines for the DAC chips and binning the rest!

Then using the chips as the basis for a D.I.Y project :)

Does anyone know what chip the Quad 67 uses ? I've just brought mine back into service, it's really good apart from bass tightness.

The Quad 66 which Marco lists as one of those having the 1541 chip was one of the worst players ever ( in fact a re-badged Philips ) , I remember even Quad enthusiasts at the time despairing how bad it was

Marco
19-08-2008, 09:26
I've never heard a Quad 66, Hans, nor a 67, so I can't comment.

The list was purely to illustrate which older players use TDA1541s should anyone be familiar with them and wish to have them brought up to date by a company like Audiocom.

Some of the players listed are ripe for modifying, and when done so, have the potential to become something special that may outperform many modern CDPs at a much lower overall cost.

It is not a definitive list of great sounding CD players of the past.

The problem with the TDA1541A is that it needs too much attention (like three dedicated supplies for the DAC and quality bit decoupling caps around the DAC) for a lot of budget players out there (that use heavily shared 78xx regulation), so they do sound harsh & digital. Perhaps this is why bitstream literally 'smoothed out' the sound! Time is ticking away for many of these classic machines too and I can't help but believe a TDA1541A-based DAC is the way to go. Future proof (with computer-based audio in mind), no transport to break and generally more attention paid to the power supply than most Philips / Marantz / Sony etc. players.

Hi David,

Welcome, and good to see you here!

I look forward to having some interesting chats on hi-fi and music in the weeks and months ahead :)

Best regards,

Marco.

P.S I'll be sending you the thing we discussed later today.

thanks Marco - nice to be here - and hi to everyone else!

I have to say it's an interesting forum; lots of my own personal interests here - SL1200s and TDA1541s to name but two!

Thanks for you feedback, David. We try to be a little different and this reflects in the types of discussions that take place.

I have a feeling that there will be lots to interest you here and hope that you'll pop in whenever you can to offer your thoughts :)

Hi David, welcome to the Art of Sound.

I hope you enjoy the ethos and general 'feel' of our forum. We exist to exchange knowledge and ideas, to support the industry and keep alive the tradition of listening to music through the highest fidelity media (past present and future) available according to budget.

I'm definitely pleased to see a sticky designated to this chip. I first heard about it from the good- if PLENTY strange- lampizator site. There's quite a few more players to add to the list by the way- one i'm using just now is the sony M95.

These players have a lot going for them: cheap, easily available for most models and parts, easy to mod... awesome sound... :)

Here is a pic of the TDA1541A R1 in my arcam alpha. I hope very soon to start modding a bit, but in fairness after haviing it in use for over a week it sounds great!

Any ideas for simple and inexpensive mods greatfully recieved! :)

Hi Steve

For inexpensive mods start out with making sure both pairs of op-amps are OP27GN (Leo already mentioned that one elsewhere :))

Fit some OSCON SP 25V/10uF to decoupling and bypass the LM317 & LM337 for the +/- 15V analogue rails.

On the audio board replace the 50V/1000uF input bypass capacitors with something like Panasonic NHG. Do the same for the power supply smoothing capacitors on the main board.

Fit the best audio caps you can buy for decoupling the TDA1541 +5V, -5V & -15V, I found the best were Black Gate N - 16V/100uF.

Best Wishes
Mark /Audiocom

The Arcams are nice and ripe for modding, their cheap looking, a bit crappy as stock but can punch way above the weight after a bit of tinkering:eyebrows:

In fairness I do not think it sounds bad to begin with. Anyway, I have ordered some op-amps and quite a few nice schottky diodes... :smoking:

Can anyone tell me if farnell do a socket for the op amps, to save me having to desolder if I want to try others?

Ta!

/thinking about getting a proper soldering station now, the antex iron I have is not really good enough for the better lead free stuff.

I use one of these for most stuff, seems good enough for ROHS solder when using a suitable sized bit

For SMD stuff I use one of these cheap adjustable temp ones http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B000HDG0AO/ref=dp_image_0?ie=UTF8&n=228013&s=hi
