Hi folks ... In the continuing quest for AV nirvana .. :) .. Is anyone using anything to stream movies/Utube etc etc through their AV system from the net and/or their home computer. I have found this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-SMPN100B-Media-Player-Built-/dp/B004FQTPO2/ref=sr_1_23?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1297600559&sr=1-23) from Sony but it seems to have a lot of issues regarding what and what it will not access. Any ideas/suggestions welcome ..

If you get the right TV Brian it's all built in :eyebrows: There are quite a few TVs out there with WiFi built in or capable of being plugged into a router.

My TV does it but i'm not interested so it's switched off :)

As for the box of tricks i have no experience so can't really comment..

Blimey .. !! ... you are right .. I bought a Panasonic and apparently it will access stuff .. ... but I am away from home now and did not get a lot of time to play with it last time back ... my excuse :mental: ... I don't think it can access my laptop movies though .. and I will have to buy some sort of extra wifi dongle thing for it to access my server ... so still going to look for something standalone .. Thanks ...

I use an xtreamer, which is pretty cool. But generally, wifi video is a bit of a struggle, easy to get problems...

yes it's quite easy to link your tv to either your network or your pc :eyebrows: the hard part is that if you intend to use your new A/V set up to handle the sound and you have your tv on a network connection you will really struggle to get the two to sync, the best way is either run the video and audio direct from your pc to your tv and DSP respectivley or send everything through the DSP, the way i have mine set up is a HDMI from my media centre pc to the tv and a toslink cable to my A/V amp, it works a treat.:)

I have had some experience with this type of thing, and currently use two Popcornhour NMTs (which will handle most common file formats for audio, video and photos), one in the living ropom, the other in the bedroom. The older 110 series is in the living room, mainly because I run Music Player Daemon on it, which is not available for the newer 200 series. (This is a music jukebox system software, which makes cueing and playing almost any type of music file very easy. Other jukeboxes are available, but mainly they are better with film).

I have a number of USB drives connected to one of the NMTs, and with this and the PCs which may be connected to the network, I can access and playback media for all over the house on either TV or Hi Fi system (or computer). I use Topfield 5800s for PVR functions, and transfer via USB to PC/NMTs. Nowadays, there are newer HD PVRs which have some of these functions, such as 3View, Humax Fox HDR, Technika/Fetch 8320HD (which has on-board WiFi), but like the TVs with built-in media clients, none of them have quite the range of functionality or reliabilty  as my system yet. I think if I was starting over, I might go for a Vu+ Duo system, which has satellite HD tuners built-in, and can have Freeview USB tuners added, but is basically a bespoke Linux Enigma 2 system in a PVR box, so very customisable. Although the NMTs can have WiFi added, I use wired ethernet connections exclusively, as for streaming puposes, especially if HD material is involved, wire is much more stable.

Soon, the new Youview system will be out which will offer more Internet connectivity (mainly for commercial media via IP :(), should you deem it necessary. Personally, I think we have too much already.
