hello!

im looking at buying a nice new cartridge for my SL-1200GLD and thought since you know more about this than me id ask here ;)

this will be for playback and recording my tracks to the computer only and not for DJ'ing or anything like that.

on the list

Grado Reference
Audio Technica AT-OC9/III

any other suggestions?

I play mostly electronic music, from kraftwerk to techno . . . . . . . .

thanks

Gary

Hi Gary,

I've only got personal experience of MM's in my 1210 but there are some stunning MM's available for your budget - also depends on the "sound" you like.

If you can get one the Nagaoka MP11 Boron is simply stunning, phenomenal bass drive and PRaT but still delivers all the detail. It tracks superbly well easily sailing through track 3 on the HFN test disc. Also highly recommended are the Reca Reson and AT 150 mlx. The AT is more "airy" than the Nagaoka with a bit more fine detail - has a slightly more "CD" presentation but still up there with the best. The Reca sits between the 2.

Others will give info on MC's I am sure.

Whatever you go for correct alignment is key and you could do a lot worse than getting a custom tractor from Yip at MINT (http://www.mintlp.com/best.htm) - I've posted some info on this on another thread.

Best of luck.

Steve

Hi Stephen, thanks for your reply

there is a Nagaoka MP500 on ebay at the moment, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NAGAOKA-MP-500H-MM-CARTRIDGE-Headshell-NEW-MP-500-BORON-/140328523105?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20ac3b5561

it says boron, is that just to trick people like me who dont know the difference?

my only concern would be the availability of stylus should I break it (high probability)

Buy this here (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8573)

and use the change for beer/music/other hifi stuff. Do it now.

BTW not affiliated, just a fan of the AT series.

In the past ive read many threads on Grados and the Techy and the conclusion seemed to be that they were sensitive to the transformer under the platter resulting in distortion when tracking the inner grooves.

I see, thanks for that Colin, seems its a bit more tricky than I thought buying a new cartridge . . . .

the only one recommended so far that I can find for sale is the AT 150 mlx and that's in japan. . . . . . . .

any others you would recommend?

Seems to be a unanimous positive for the Denon 110 and 160. I want to try one myself but will have to wait until after xmas.

Hi Gary, Ive looked at your system and im going to make a bit of a left field suggestion here Croft Micro basic(you can just use the phono stage) and Shure M55 with a Mark Saunders stylus tracking at 2,9 grams. Im in Cardiff, PM me if you are interested in hearing this combo.

Thanks for the offer paul, do you have this set up on a technics 1200/1210?

No, but the Shure is in an SME type headshell so you could try it on the Technics if you had it with you.

that's very kind of you, Paul but I decided to just get the best I could afford and went for the AT-OC9/III after reading others experience with them.

just need a MC phono stage for it now . . . .
