I remember many years ago when I worked in a local hifi shop we sold this range of amplifiers. IIRC they may have been class A, they certainly got hot enough and had a warm sound to them. I know some thought at the time that they were not much cop but I thought they sounded great with the right speakers. I have been trying to find some info on them but apart from one pic and a foreign page I have drawn a blank. Does anyone have any info / reviews on them or maybe even know anyone selling one? Cheers fellas.

WOW! I have just for the hell of it done a search on evilpay and lo and behold...

May be a bit pricey though!

I remember these Steve - I thought they were quite nice too. A friend had the big one & it's matching tuner.
I also waited, with breath, held for the big-boy amps they trumpeted about for a while that never materialised except for some empty chassis' that were on display at one of the shows.

I have some magazine reviews somewhere - see what I can turn up for you.

Cheers

Thanks Chris. I was just reminiscing about some old gear I have heard and this popped into my head! Steve

Weren't these made by Cambridge Audio (under Stan Curtis)?

They were too cheap and almost anonymous looking I think. AR were then known for their turntables and a few of their speakers were still competitive in the UK. I think the electronics were known more as "me too" sadly.

Apart from the really old AR Amp, there was an AR Integrated that was a clone of the big knob Cambridges - that's the one you're referring to, right? But Steve's talking about the later sloped fascia models.

Here ya go Steve...............

HFN/RR January 1987 reviewed four of the nine model range. CD-04 CD player, T-04 tuner, A-04 & A-06 integrated amps.

Nice bits of kit. In fact I've always thought the A-06, T-04 and CD-04 together with an RD-06 cassette deck, EB101 turntable and pair of 44BX or 66BX loudspeakers would be one of the best one-make complete systems out there.

Since this thread was last active, I've bought myself a pair of the 44BX that Adam mentions above. Apart from the fact that they only cost £5.50, they're the best stand mounters I've ever owned - excellent in fact.

Well,Can you believe it?
Just like buses, after waiting such a long time, two come together!
Im not sure about paying that amount for the first one,but the one at £170 is reasonable enough considering the quality and rareness of the product, but still a little on the high side....see here:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CLASSIC-ACOUSTIC-RESEARCH-AR-06-INTEGRATED-AMPLIFIER-AND-T-04-TUNER-/251092596856?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_HiFi_Separates_Sys tems_Combos&hash=item3a7648f878
As said previously,I have really enjoyed using the A-O6 amp in my other system and the tuner is quite sensitive and a nice bonus to have with it. I was going to list it on here, but having revisited it, and tried it with the sbt,Ive changed my mind.....that review done so many years ago,is bang on the money and it really does sound like a far more expensive amp.I love the phono stage too. I think Ill keep it for a while longer as it seems to have got better with age and very stylish looking too!:)......now Ill have to get someone to refoam the AR speakers, they've been waiting long enough and I havent a clue how to do it:scratch:
