View Full Version : Pictures Of Your Gear for the 2010 Banner Refresh...

Beechwoods
14-07-2010, 18:35
As discussed here: http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=7002 We're planning on refreshing the current banner. I'd like to ask all members to dig out their best gear photographs for incorporation into the design. I'm looking for clear, well lit, fullsize pictures that capture the essence of your kit.

By submitting your picture for use in the design, you're waiving your rights to the image, but you will get the warm glow of knowing your gear is featured :)

I may not be able to use all images submitted, as the images used need to work together as a whole, and be representative of the many 'flavours' of equipment and sound reproduction discussed on AOS.

Please email me directly with any pictures, or alternatively, point me to posts where you have posted your pictures previously. I very much prefer that you email me the 'big' versions of your photos though, so I can work with images that will scale and be manipulated well.

Email me here: beechwoods@theartofsound.net

Many thanks!

But we need more images to work with, so let's have them, guys!

By when do you want the photos Nick? Are they to be 'arty' or factual (that's to say 'audio-porn')?

I'd like to get the pictures pulled together in the next 10 days, so say by the 25th July.

Arty or factual - the main thing is they're decently lit, and clear - the kind of things that will shrink well but maintain their definition.

I actually had an idea for nice arty macro photo of the glowing innards of a 300B (for example) that I was going to take, But there are a few problems with that....

1. I'm not very 'arty'!

2. I don't think my camera is good enough!

3. I'm a bone idle twat!

And the 300B is an over-rated valve. Designed to be a reliable amplifier for telephone use, where it would be fitted into telephone repeater circuits, buried underground and left unattended for years!

Yeah, I kinda know that (even though it was actually the 300A that was invented as a repeater). I've been a telecommunications engineer for thirty years or so.

Got it! Thanks Steve. I'm sure we'll be able find some space for the good old copper amp!

What I'd really like is some more DIY and computer music shots... a nice Squeezebox perhaps?

And I'd like some pics of unique looking speakers? Some nice OB's or stupendous horns perhaps?

I could go looking through the gallery, but I'd much rather people came to me!

Trouble maker.....;)

I expect some copying without asking, for non commercial use (it would be polite to ask, and permission may be granted with a credit being given to the source) but I draw the line at the use of my photos for any commercial use other than my own. However each case would be reviewed as they come up so permission might be given....or not as the case may be.

Corporate theft of members' pictures cheeses me off. It's not so hard just to PM and ask. Most people would be flattered to have their pictures used... so long as it wasn't to misrepresent in a shady eBay auction.

From a compositional point of view, I have to confess that I’m not particularly happy with any of them. I detest converging verticals, however I don’t know how to affect the Scheimpflug principle with a digital camera!

All of the photos were taken under either tungsten or fluorescent light. With my film camera, I have the necessary filters to correct for this. As such, I have had to make some post processing correction. However the software I have is somewhat crude, so several of the images have a vestigial colour cast. No doubt you will have better and more sophisticated software.

If there are any images that you like the look of but would prefer a different angle, then let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

I can, if you wish, have a go at taking some ‘arty’ shots of power amplifier heat sinks, or of my EMT turntable.

Being a crappier than crap photographer & having no kit in the way of any real interest, (& for other reasons) I've kept out of this thread a bit, but I'd like to suggest that a photo of a big ol' stack o' software might be nice.

:)

Lightroom is always my recomendation for photo manipulation, it's white balance control is very good as it can be adjusted throughout the normal cool reds to hot blues (for want of a better way of describing it), but it also has a sorta green/magenta adjustment for fine tweaking... I thourouly recomend it to compensate for digital cameras consistently shit white balance... Shooting raw helps with the final result too

I thourouly recomend it to compensate for digital cameras consistently shit white balance... Shooting raw helps with the final result too

Thanks for that Hamish.

I do know of perspective correcting lenses, either of the vertical 'shift' type and/or the 'tilt' type. However, at the moment, my digital camera is a simple little pocket job. I have only just lost my digital virginity (stop sniggering Marco!) and am still finding my way around, after over forty years of 35mm film photography. The 'crude' post correction software I referred to, is simply that provided by Photobucket in their edit option. I'm sure that there is much better and sophisticated image manipulation software that can, amongst other things, correct for converging verticals, barrel or pincusion distortion and a host of other geometric aberrations.

Likewise with chromatic correction; the white light balance to which you refer.

I'm still learning and my little Lumix is a starter camera for me. When my six numbers come up, I'll rush out and buy a Leica M10! That way, I'll be able to use my Leica lenses and filters, though a perspecive correcting lens is not, as yet, available for the Leica.

Double entendres aside, wiping volume knobs is generally a good thing, but take care if you wipe from left to right. The same applies to wiping the controls on a cooker - yikes, I nearly lost a house that way once!

Beechwoods

Do you suggest wiping upwards or downwards Chris. A left to right movement in an upwards direction could still spell disaster in the kitchen.

Don't tell that to the kings of the BBQ - Australians - they use gas, and anyway, using BBQ lighter is cheating!

Steve Toy

Screwed up bits of newspaper in the bottom set alight and then joining ensuing the convection currents in the air followed by half a litre of BBQ lighter usually does it.

Yeah you gotta get it lit somehow... Can't be bothered with Flint and kindling wood and shit.
Half the fun of BBQ is timing things right - getting the stuff that needs quick heat for short time on first and the stuff that needs less heat for longer when it's not so hot... And moving the grills up and down etc ... If you have a knob you have to much control... You might as well just cook on the hob

Except that food cooked on a gas BBQ tastes better than food cooked on a hob (which generally) involves frying. Forget all the pre-prepared BBQ food, cook simple meat or fish, taste and juicyness is fabulous. A decent gas BBQ can be had for £120 to £150, seriously it's not the same as cooking on a kitchen hob.

We BBQ nearly every night if we can between April & October - you can only do that with Gas - and believe me, the closest you will ever get to a restaurant prepared fillet steak is to chargrill it on a gas BBQ. I mentioned Tuna streak the other day - that is just as good - the meat is sealed, and as Clive says, keeps the juicyness.

We had homemade burgers last night (all you need is to roll a ball of lean steak mince and flatten in - nothing else is needed, no breadcrumbs, egg, etc. The secret is not to move it until the first side is sealed/cooked - 8 mins or so then flip. Turn up the heat to crisp both sides.)

Chicken kebabs tonight - juice of a lemon, a little olive oil, clove or two of garlic and some oregano - dice a chicken breast and marinade for at least 4 hours. Skewer with red onion, mushrooms and peppers. Serve in a lightly toasted pita bread.) BBQ for 20 mins. Virtually no fat and delicious.

Naughty but nice tomorrow though - sausages from the local butcher! Yum!

The new banner has just gone live - I'm sure you've noticed :) I'd like to send out a massive thank you to everyone who submitted pictures. While we had to make some difficult decisions about which ones worked together as whole, covering the main 'AOS bases' they were all appreciated. And I'm actually working on a little thing which I hope will be a permanent showcase for some of the other pics submitted, and other good photos from members as time goes on.

I hope you like it Chris!

It's nice Nick. The quality of the images is first rate - they look really clean & fresh. Well done to the photographers out there!

Also, the text looks crisper than before, perhaps just because it's slightly smaller, but there were a couple of slightly wonky edges to some of the letters before.

Can I make one suggestion?
The area that the lettering is in may benefit from a border and/or a different colour. I feel it would stand out better that way. Maybe once the ads have moved down the page the balance will be restored as they're the same mustard colour.
Just a thought.

Cheers

Jonboy
22-08-2010, 23:33
The resize deffo makes for a better look, it does not dominate so much as the old one, which i think is for the best

Beechwoods
22-08-2010, 23:33
Thanks for your comments, Chris. In fairness your comments about the old banner are the result of it being 'shrunk' and compressed more than once. The crispness is down to me being able to work with only one compression step right at the end of the design - everything else was done losslessly, apart from the originally submitted pictures, which while compressed were sometimes upwards of 3MB so good source material!

We tried the banner with and without a border. Without worked better, we felt - I like the way the 'logo' blends into the main page colour, leading you in to the main page. The borderless design was also felt to be cleaner and more 'modern'... but your mileage may vary! I'm interested in your idea of a contrasting colour. I'll hold that thought.

Moving the ads will make a difference... I want to get that done asap, but I need to do it properly and so need to brush up on the VB guide to using ad-templates!

The Grand Wazoo
22-08-2010, 23:44
Yeah, I agree about the border - but I suggested it cos some folks like 'em!
See what it's like when the ads have gone because they're all that same colour & it may be that the look is transformed when you don't have them there. I suspect that their absence will make the mid background of the page appear to be darker too because it will alter the eye's perception of the contrast (not the mustard shade but the one that's between it & the yellow).

The 4th one's mine. There's plenty of resolution and colour depth in the original I sent Nick that he could whack the contrast up and highlight the silver in the arm a little if necessary.
