Gents.

Just a couple of shots of my system in it's new(ish) home. Ideally the room would be bigger but it's pretty good and doesn't have to compete with TV viewing (movies only in this room).

Turntable placement not ideal at present given that the floors are traditional suspended. At the moment I'm using an old Seismic Sink I had, but a proper wall shelf will be in place shortly.

Next changes will be a better unit to replace the slightly bendy Ikea one, with a bit more space (i.e. some rather than none!) in the bottom shelf for ventilation!

Next system changes will be major improvements to the Techie; TimeStep PSU and bearing, plus a Jelco 750 to replace the tweaked standard arm.

Is there anything between your speakers and the floor?

Those woofers look pretty big...like, 15 inches big, or is that just photographic licence?

You sure don't need to take anything when you've got that table as a focal point! Looks a bit like Andre's avatar.

However I would urge you sort out ventilation toute sweet for your MF amplifier...they run warmish so overheating may be a future issue.

They big-ish but not that massive, they are 10" Volt drivers.

The only thing between the speakers and the floor at the moment are four hard felt pads. When I'm sure I'm not going to move them about anymore, I may look for something else but as they weigh 122Kg each (managed to get them on some scales out of interest), they're quite firmly placed as it is.

Yes I completely agree and I've actually got a unit in the pipe which will give a couple of inches clearance. However it's not too much of a problem as it's rare that the M3 really gets to stretch it's legs that much.

Hi Steve, Great looking system & nice looking room. Good seating position for listening to your music and watcing your TV, I suppose most folks listening positions and rooms are a compromise. I'm currently looking for easy seat for listening to my system as I always end up lying on the floor with a cushion under my head:lol: but at least my glass of red wine doesn't have far to fall when I fall asleep:doh:

I would imagine they would be pretty efficient relative to the cross-overs, etc.

Thanks very much, but I would like to say that while I may have designed, commissioned and assembled them, the man who's most responsible for their awesomeness, is John at Slate Age. The man is a magician with stone and I can't praise and recommend him enough.

Seriously. if there's ANYTHING that you've ever thought would look or sound better made out of slate, granite, sandstone or whatever, I suggest you give him a call, as he love a challenge.

Very nice Steve, my first thought was Ikea-rumba! ;)

Yes my current unit was a functional but temp arrangement using a Frankenstein creation made from two LACK TV benches that we had in the old flat.

The advantages are a practical two shelf unit which was CHEAP. The downside is that a 5' long unit made out of particle board and cardboard honeycomb, is really not up to supporting 40KG+ of MF power amp. As a results it's gone a bit 'banana shaped' and is being repalced by a lovely, solid wood, had crafted unit by Mark from Eat Sleep Live

Regards,

Unfortunately the limitations have pretty much been set by the following:

1. Local planning restrictions mean it must be 2.5m or less in overall height

2. Generally 'difficult' neighbour on one side means it wasn't worth bothering applying for planning permission as she would have objected (she 'had a word' about it as it is and was clearly gutted that there was nothing she could do about it).

3. The width of our garden

4. The amount of garden that we could use, while still leaving enough space to actually build the thing.

Up-shot is that it will be 4m x 4.5m. Not as big as I would have liked ideally, as it's rather square, but the reality is that with it's solid floor (current room is trad suspended with a 2' void under the floorboards) and total freedom from domestic limitations or door/walkways (sliding glass door), it's massively better that the current arrangement.

Also it's going to have it's own 40A feed and dedicated consumer unit, so power should be nice and clean too.

Already have plans to do just that, but to be honest, there's basically no access apart from a securely locked passage way, plus of course, none of my kit is the kind you can scale walls while carrying...

Only my immediate neighbours could see in, and with the glass reflections it's quite hard unless you are right up close.

Oh and the glazing panels are laminated security glass btw....

Really great actually. Acoustics are much better than my previous room. Probably the biggest difference is to the bass because of the move to solid floors from suspended wood.

Dedicated mains feed and PS Audio Power Plant has played a big part too.

Still have amp issues to resolve but that will be sorted later this month when a new MBL 7008 arrives. Loved the Chapters' sound but just couldn't live with the woeful level of 'support' from the company so I'm moving them on while they are still working perfectly.

I appreciate you have strong glass there, but as glass can resonate at 5kHz or so, I'd be inclined to get some drapes and experiment with drawing them - or not :)

Those super-tweeters shouldn't be strictly necessary as the ACT's tweeters go out to 30kHz or so. I remember the speakers themselves having a razor-sharp treble as it is; maybe the super-tweeters smooth things a bit?

Nice one, mate - I'm pleased for you. It certainly looks like a comfortable and inviting place to listen to music :)

Undoubtedly, and I'm glad you attended to that area of your set-up. More people should look at providing their hi-fi systems with the cleanest 'fuel' (mains supply) possible, as it makes a *HUGE* difference to sound quality, improving it in ways that no piece of new equipment can ever hope to achieve!

You've certainly been busy Steve!

I can vouch for that company also. They made some tables for us to a bespoke request and we're really pleased with the results. I wish we'd found them before investing in metal wall mounted HiFi racks but we intend to use them again in future. They delivered the stuff in person as it took two people to lift the coffee table!

I seem to prefer my speakers sitting in a lively acoustic, with some treatment around the listening area. Whenever I've tried to dampen the back wall it may have tightened the bass but it just sucks the life out of the presentation for me. Personally I'd go for some vertical fabric blinds...

So having finally got around to posting some pics, I thought I should post
a slightly more detailed description of the finished room.

It's a decent size, though as mentioned previously, this was ultimately
dictated by local planning regulations and the amount of space available at
the bottom of the garden. Internally it's basically square (I know, I
know, I had no choice) at 4.0m deep, 3.9m wide. Internal headroom is a bit
limited as the total building needed to be <2.5m Once foundations, roof
structure and internal finishing is accounted for, the internal height is
almost exactly 2.0m I would have liked a bit more but It's enough for me
at 6'3" and I don't know anyone taller than 6'6" In any case, it's big
enough for my system, storage and two 3-seater sofas, so that's good
enough.

My initial worries about whether the internal dimensions would have any
negative implications for sound quality (considering I couldn't really
alter them) seem to have been unfounded and I haven't noticed any aspect of
the sound which draws attention to itself, which I guess is a good thing.
I must admit that having had people going on about 'golden ratios' and
'make sure it's not square', I was REALLY worried that it just wouldn't
sound right. But for whatever reason (perhaps the lower than normal
ceiling height), it really does seem to work OK. One thing that has made a
BIG difference is having a solid rather that traditional suspended wood
floor. Bass is both deeper and tighter with no boomy tendencies.

Taking people's comments on-board, and knowing the last winter we had, I
have made the room as well insulated as possible. The brick shell has been
lined with 100mm of Celotex on the walls, 150mm in the roof, and then the
whole thing has been finished with another layer of insulation backed
plasterboard. The floor has 100mm of insulation under the screed finish
and the glazing is A-rated 28mm argon filled units with a security film
applied. The flooring is industrial grade ceramic tiling from FMG Fabbrica
, supplied by John Slate up at Slate Age. It's as tough as old boots
(needs to be in a garden room) and looks great. Only thing is that because
it's designed for commercial applications (big hotels, airports etc) with
heavy foot-traffic, it's designed to be totally non-slip and although it
looks like riven stone, it's actually quite rough, which means it is
IMPOSSIBLE to slide anything across it. Still, at least the rug stays
put.....

I've had a separate armoured cable run from the main CU, with the room
having it's own mini CU which you can see in the corner. I'm also now
using a PS Audio Power Plant Premier, so my mains supply is massively
better than it was before. Thought I do still need to get Mark Grant to
make me up a full set of mains cables.

The room also has full network and internet access via the armoured Cat6
cable which I had installed at the same time as the power. With data
sockets at each end and gigabit switches, I've got a full gigabit
connection which allows me stream HD video, listen to music AND surf the
net without any bandwidth issues. All of my media is served from a Drobo
FS located in the house so the listening room is as near to totally silent
as I've ever experienced, and this has been really nice and something I
very much appreciate now.

I've not experimented much with speaker positioning yet as things seem
pretty good as they are - about 1m from the side walls and 0.5m from the
glass. The room gives a nice balanced sound, neither to 'live' or 'dead'
that I've noticed so far, but of course I've the freedom to experiment with
wall coverings on the side walls and bass traps in the corners at a later
stage if I want to. Another thing which really adds to the enjoyment of
listening in the room is having the glass wall behind the speakers. I'm
sure it's just psychological, but that sense of 'openness' of being able to
see through the wall and into the garden, with nothing between the
speakers, really seems to translate into and openness and transparency to
the sound and an improvement to imaging.

Without doubt through, the best aspect of now having a dedicated room, and
more importantly one which is totally detached from the the house and any
neighbours, is the ability to listen to music at any time and (within
reason) any volume without fear of disturbing anyone. On the first weekend
it was up and running, my friend Alex and I had a fantastic late night
session going through the Genesis back-catalogue until around 3am. We
didn't have it silly loud, but it was certainly much louder than would have
been socially acceptable in a house where others were sleeping or with
neighbours with adjoining walls.

It's also made wonderful use of what was previously dead space, occupied by
a shed full of junk. Now we have something which motivates us to use our
garden to the full and provides and oasis of calm away from the house.

All in all, I'm delighted

Oh and I will definitely be adding some drapes this weekend....

Apparently, keep the drapes around 6" away from the glazing - this from the Yahoo Spendor forum, wherin many engineers post...

Hi Steve,

Sounds like you're well-chuffed with the result, which you certainly should be!

So when's the big AoS 'room warming' party? :eyebrows: ;)

Thought I do still need to get Mark Grant to
make me up a full set of mains cables.

Since you've attended to everything else so well, I'd urge you to get those, as, trust me, you'll be gob-smacked at the difference they make, sonically, especially now you've got the correct 'foundation' in place for your system (in more ways than one!)

Enjoy!

Marco.

Buy complete blind luck, I reckon that will be more or less exactly where they will end up due to the window recess and size of the curtain wire fixings....

Personally I'd go for some vertical fabric blinds...

That was my first instinct but Susy, who has the final word on aesthetic matters because of her graphic design background, says they are for offices only...

If things had concluded a bit earlier in the year, I was planning to have an AOS BBQ but it's a bit late now.

Definitely up for hosting anyone who's up for a visit, possibly bringing the odd bit of kit of theirs to try in a different environment?

I'm off down to visit Jerry on Wednesday so hopefully he'll be able to make a return visit before too long.

No worries, Steve - I was only kidding :)

I'm sure that Jerry will love your new room and will be able to bring some kit round with him (he's not got much like)

I'd also like to visit sometime, but it'll have to wait for a bit, as my diary is chocker until November!

Well I've finally got those curtains up!

They're not all that heavy, they aren't lined for example, but they not only make the room feel more comfortable and cozy (really no sense that you're anywhere other than another room in the house) but they have definately improved the sound all round.

The bass seems tighter and deeper (gap between curtain and window is exactly 6" btw) and the HF seems cleaner. Over all the balance between being 'live' and 'well damped' seems about right.

Plus of course it shields everything from prying eyes.

Pics to follow.

Lining the curtains will further treat the room, hopefully not too much - you need some life but controlled and will help keep the warmth in and cold out (the temperature seems to be dropping by a degree a week right now).

I might experiment to see if an additional layer helps or over does things as it sounds pretty bloody good as it is.

I don't need to worry about heat insulation, my OTT approach with the insulation has produced a building that just doesn't seem to lose anything much in the way of heat. I came down first thing after one of the chilliest nights so far and yet agin, just residual from the electronics had kept the room at a perfectly comfortable temperature. :)

Yup - that sounds like a good plan!

I'm in a solid state phase at the moment - so I won't be able to bring along any glowing glass amps.
But I'm sure I'll be able to find something interesting. :) ... in fact, there could well be a couple of interesting items arriving today.
