I have been given (FOC) 3 reels of TDK Audua L1800 tape. Also, a 10.5" reel of tape in a Magnex box (so it may, or may not be, Magnex - but the box looks like a premium product).

The TDK is declared new, and from it's visual state (still plastic wrapped with unwrinkled leaders) could well be.

The Magnex, if that's what it is, may have been used but I haven't put any these tapes near my player yet.

Are they known to suffer from any of the declared SSS issues and likely to gum up my tape path, or are they worth trying out? I've not been able to find too much on Google about them.

Don't know about those tapes Bob but when I put some old unused Pyral on my Grundig it shed oxide for the first two run throughs.

I managed a good recording on the third pass.

This shedding oxide business: is it just a simple, normal clean with isopropyl alcohol to remove it? It's nothing more sinister is it?

I might just have a go with the TDK as I remember it as a well respected name from the days of cassette. Magnex I've never heard of and can only find references to Magnex Cassette tape on Google. So this one may stay in the box for a while.

Thanks both.

Yes just clean the tape path as you would normally.

Perhaps the good thing is that the oxide is easily visible.

That'll be OK then, the hammer and chisel can stay in the drawer...........

load the tape up and do not press play, press FF, note if there is a gradual slow down ?, half way through press stop and check the the tape stand off guides for a brown oxide deposit
Then REW back to "0" and check again ?
If there is nothing on the guides the tape is good to go
If there is a build up of oxide and a noticeable slow down on FF / REW bin the tape and keep the reel if its metal

So it sheds as quickly as that then?

The things I'm picking up that seem obvious but aren't until you know. I'll have a go before I get serious with any of it.

Thanks Alan.

Bob Yes if its sticky it will start shedding straight away
Its easy to get it off the stand off guides with isopropyl alcohol but more difficult to get it off your heads so don't test in play mode
This is what it looks like

Thanks Alan. I don't know what I thought it might have looked like, but it certainly wasn't that! Something to be avoided.

I'm glad mine didn't look that bad, more dry oxide shed than sticky :)
