Guessing you wont get a lot of choice at that price that works so i,d say an Akai. Good starter deck, and where i am.

I,m guessing a 4000 series. Think the bigger one would be more expensive. I.ve a 4000d i think. Decent player for money, although needs a little attention now it still works ok. They will also stand on end happily. Twin speed 4 track. A decent starter. You might get a Sony too.

Hi-fiHangar are selling a Sony 377 pretty cheap just now. Rewind isn't 100% but plays and records fine.

If interested it's worth phoning the shop direct 😉

None?

I don't want to put you off All, but I just don't get the R2R thing. What you record will only (hopefully) be as good as the source, so unless you own a library of original recordings transcribed straight from a master tape, I can't see the benefit. Unless of course, one just enjoys R2R as an entertaining plaything and something to tinker with.

Al,

I'm not sure that you can get anything really worthwhile for £250, unless you're a technical whizz and have a workshop at home. 3-4 years ago, you could have got a Revox A77 for that sort of money, but not now. Sure you might get an Akai 4000DB, which would be a bit of fun. You might also be able to play some 7.5 IPS 4 track commercial tapes. A serviced domestic R2R running at 7.5 IPS will sound better than decent cassette, but few vintage domestic machines are running at their best. But as Geoff says, the R2R thing is all about the highest quality, which can outshine even the most expensive and exotic turntable system for relatively small amounts of money for the hardware (but not the software).

Would have thought you can pick up an A77 for that sort of dough.
Not tested against an Akai but I imagine far better SQ

I sold an Akai GX625 for £100 a year back and its still going strong as far as I know they are a great sounding deck for the money
Here is a better model for £299

If I ever get round to finishing my A77 £250 would be all I would ask for it, its 90% recapped at the min

I would choose a Tandberg over most Akai machines, but it depends on whether you want full 10.5" spool cabability.

I paid £500 for my Nagra IV-S, however that was 10 years ago.

Another 'hbchjhgv gfvgg bh' :steam: that won't post to Northern Ireland, and what is this 'Doesn't post to United Kingdom' they are based in the United Kingdom.

Anyway a Revox A77 would be my suggestion, doable for about your budget.
