Tape heads and the player generally in very good nick but tape path dirty so squealing a bit particularly on FF Rew also tape reels keep spinning when rew and tape leaves the spool so the tensioners need adjusting, so it needs a good service and calibration which I will do myself.
It came with some good qulity tapes LPR35 and ATR and the Nab adapters
Got it for £750 so happy really as these can go for silly money now :)

Managed to cure the vibrating sound on FF/Rew it turned out to be the plastic counter belt idler wheel, a drop of lubrication cured it
I cleaned up all of the tape transport and heads
Some of the circuit boards were very dusty, I cleaned up most of the dust with a soft paint brush dampened with IPA (avoiding any polystyrene caps)
The Volume pots were noisy as well so I lubricated them and the switches
I also lubricated the little switch in the head block and nipped up the tabs, a known problem on these decks
This bit of maintenance has cleaned up the sound a lot so its sounding very nice at the moment

All the caps look original but I can't see any that are bulging or leaking ATM. Just like the Revox decks these are of the age where cap failure and leakage can damage the circuit boards.
So it looks like a re cap is inevitable and I already have the list of some 180 caps required to do that
Not the easiest deck to work on so recapping is going to be tricky I think
Very nice deck though so worth the effort id say

Nice looking machine Alan...

In fully restored order now ironically you are looking at around what the A 810 behind it would cost you now in broken condition.

I got my first one of these from a junk shop when I was 16 - cost me £50.00 at the time which believe me was a king's ransom to a sad spotty upstart shite of a teenager. I will never forget carrying it back on 5 train services on a journey of nearly 150 miles.

Those were the days.

Alan,

Do you really want to recap this, if it's working ok? It's not like working on a Studer, where all the cards just pop out. I know some audiophiles like to recap, but I bet Abbey Road and AIR didn't go around recapping their R2Rs. They just carried on using them until they broke (which was rarely).

It does look very nice though :)

I in no hurry to do it Charlie and I am just enjoying it for what it is at the moment
Over on Tapheads.net the techs there say just do it or risk the consequences then on the other hand others say just fix it when its broken
I certainly don't have the time right now so Ill play it by ear :)
