View Full Version : Garrard 401 Transit Screws

Done a pretty extensive search on line and so far I can't find photos of where exactly they are located, and whether one loosens them from above or below. The 401 instruction manual is so vague as to be useless.

The 401 I have there are no red screws.

If anyone has a photo with pointers pointing to them that would be very helpful.

I saw those Grant, but I didn't find them helpful. I don't know exactly what I am looking at. Yes I see the motor clamp, but does one loosen the nuts from underneath or something from above :scratch:

Should get access from top plate Neil i think. You just loosen them off to nearly off. Think they used to have clips on bottom to stop them coming right off but not always so watch you dont take right off they are spring loaded

All from an old memory but think you can just remove it if needed but dont quote me. Not seen one for 40 years lol

Grant is correct. If you remove the platter, you will see the two screw-heads (I'm not sure if they have red paint on them or not - could very easily have flaked off). Screw as if to withdraw the screws and the motor clamp will lower itself, freeing up the motor to move on its suspension. Good luck!

Yes but where exactly. I need a diagram/photo as there are loads of screw heads under the platter. I know many will think its obvious, but not to me it isn't.

Visualise its orientation Neil and measure gaps between. Then transpose that to top plate. You,ll find them that way. Good engineering principle
You can make a quick template in paper or card too. These tricks work well if stuck with these probs.

Tried that Grant and the only thing I can see looks like its down inside the well where the idler wheel sits etc. There are two screws on top of the clamp, but I am unsure if that's it. On the top plate there is nothing obvious.

With the Lenco I had a play with awhile back the transport bolts were very obvious.

They probably are in the hole, yes. Been a long time since i saw one. They are often down a little from surface... who do we know with a 401 to confirm it? You could try turning one a little and see if the ascossiated sprung screw below moves with it.

On this pic you can clearly see the left screw is under the cutout near the spindle. The right one should be too if hole is big enough. You might get a thin driver up the side from bottom for you to track it from top.

Yes that could be it.

If a 401 owner can confirm that then, that's a simple job.

Took a chance Grant and that is them. Undoing by turning anti clockwise lowers the clamp :)

There is a slight sound advantage to removing the transport bracket altogether:eyebrows:
dont forget to clean the idler gear, clean and polish the inner rim with autosol and oil the points indicated in the picture below
