From the original owner too. The junior amps sound very good and I would imagine the speakers would be quite efficient. An amazing bargain, how did I miss it.

Arrgghh - was watching that too but too busy to check my watched listings..

Nothing is too far away surely, even if you paid yourself £100 + fuel costs to collect it would still have been a good deal. I guess time is the thing but that's what weekends are for (you see your family in the evenings..).

Let's see what a lesser condition pre=power would have gone for: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200576570949

More missed bargains from my watch list:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140509496665 Soundcard with DSP so good for running software synths etc plus 4 channel digital in/out

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200574679580&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT Really want to try out a good Supex and this Linn had it's one boxed - would have been well looked after.

Only 75 miles for me... unfortunately what I've really got my heart set on is 200 miles away, and also ends after the Sansui's and I don't think both are going to be an option! Will see how much these go to...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220735883622&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&autorefresh=true#ht_500wt_1156

£132 -too rich for me in the end, as I have at least two other auctions lined up for "known quantities" coming up, but I will get a pair of big Sansuis at some point, they are just so "Hai Karate" I have to own a pair at some time in my life!

Yes, I did - which was quite appropriate for a pair of squat speakers with a lot of circular embellishments!

CLUCKING MUNT!!!!!

been watching an amp I desperately wanted for 5 days - all of a sudden on the last day the seller decides to slap a low BIN price on it and it's sold immediately.

Very suspicious :steam:

Maybe I should have emailed the seller and asked him to name a price despite the fact bidding had already been started.

If im desperate i always start the bid off, they can't alter it then & gives em some sort of incentive to keep it running. I'm kinda lucky in the fact that my obsession with a select few vintage items that don't seem to have been pulled into to the stupid money sector.

Yeah, someone had already bid, although it was still low.

I just quizzed him about it and he claims the BIN price had been on all week! I must be going mad then because I'm sure it hadn't - I would have clicked it if it had. Can't work this out. He claims he since pulled the ad because nobody went for it so just offered him a price for it. We'll see.

I just had an auction pulled that I was winning - fuming! I bid on the first day (and bid big, my top price) - others had bid too, 5 in all - then suddenly the auction ends. The guy has clearly had an offer and accepted it, but just said he has ended the auction and won't tell me why. His ad said nothing about ending the auction early. Pisses me off big time! :steam:

(Just hope he got a lot less than I was prepared to pay for it!!

Anyone looking for some good speakers this might be worth a punt I not heard the 10" but according to the Hawthrone forum has a similar sound to mine without the scale so imagine them to be great with most music but perhaps not ideal for high energy rock
What I can say for sure is the after sales service is really good and no doubt Darrel would help with any questions

Maybe we need a private members only area to discuss stuff like that?

Like you Mark i only talk about things i'm not interested in buying before the listing ends, but i do think it would be of benifit for hardened members (if that's the right term) to let other long term members know about what they may bid on and what they would pay, it could help keep prices down, but it would rely on a member being totaly honnest.

This is just a thought but i feel a lot of hifi enthusiast these days don't know anything about old hifi, it's like a minefield to them & rely on slack gobs to guide them. Thing is nowadays mate we have the ole interweb thingy, even if you know absolutly sod all about anything, you can quickly learn from sites like this and many others, folks today don't have to go to car boot sales or the like, ebay brings it to ya door.

It does tee me off though when i see piles of crap hitting huge prices, i saw a Cambridge Audio Amp sell a few months back, it was second hand and went for more than you could get it new from the shops.

Rare Bird

No Nick, the 'B77' is a bigger & different machine.. I do prefer the silver 'A77' of the MkI & II, but i'm hoping to take it upto the MkIV level in other areas...Don't know what the heads are like on this one till i get my hands on it but i can (if their not too bad) get them re lapped cheap enough, but i am considering some brand new heads at some point..I don't actually like the later 'A77' & 'B77' aesthetics..'B77's are way out of my proggy time zone anyway ;)

Seems to be, if it's old and is associated with Rogers people assume it will fetch a good price, the market for that amp must be practically none existant, you would have to have the Super Woofer to have any use for it, and those little amps are well built, simple and easy to fix if they go wrong, so the question still stands "apart from Marco, who the fcuk would buy it"

Have just spent much of the weekend anguishing over bidding on this baby:

http://offer.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&_trksid=p4340.l2565&item=320658730535

A Studer C37 ¼” two-track tape deck in excellent condition complete with VU meters, a machine that I have lusted after for years.

This is the legendary machine, similar to the model used to mix down the Beatles’s Sergeant Pepper album (actually that was the four-track version, the J37), but even so, it is a gorgeous example of Swiss engineering and a machine, which had been used in the most of the major recording studios in Europe.

So why did I pass this one up? Well sometimes your head does sensibly win over your heart. There were several doubts I had.

1. The first was having to collect it; it would have been a round trip of 160 miles (though it could have been much, much farther away).

2. It is physically large: 660mm wide, 533mm deep and 432mm tall. I’m not sure where I would have put it, or even whether it would have fitted into the boot of my car or on the rear seat.

3. It is very heavy: 78Kg; more than I could manage on my own.

But most importantly of all

4. Did I really want it? Previously tape (both reel-reel, or cassette) was a valid source of music for me, however these days they are minor and less important: to the extent that neither of my cassette decks are now part of my system; I am passing on most of my reel-reel machines to others who can use them, only keeping one machine to play the tapes I have recorded or those others have recorded for me.

So I let it go. Actually it went for a little more than would have been my maximum bid, though I could have well have increased that in order to secure a winning bid.

I’m now left wondering if I did do the right thing; I think I did – but have you seen the specification of these machines? And it was an ex-BBC item in excellent condition.

I shall content myself with the thought that I did do the right thing, and down a couple of glasses of wine. Here’s hoping that it went to someone who will use it to the full measure of its capability.

Damm – these decisions are hard to make sometimes!

I know what you mean Barry, I felt the same way about the Accuphase T101 tuner I got recently but having used it I am very glad I bought it:)

Hi Neil

Thanks for the sympathy. I'm still wondering if I did the right thing: I doubt if I'll ever see another one so close to home, in such good condition and with VU meters .... :(

I should have mentioned that the C37 uses valves, and I wasn't sure if these are still available. The machines are no longer made and spare parts are few and far between, and when they do appear are expensive.

But at the end of the day, I doubt I would have used it fully and it would just have been a 'trophy'; a part of a growing 'museum' of audio gear.

Hi Barry, i find that if i have any kind of doubt about about buying anything whether it's on ebay or in a shop then i don't buy it ;) I have never regretted any decision i have made going by those guidelines.

If you are 100% sure it's for you then you know you have made the correct decision, any kind of doubt will probably come back & bite you if you did go for it sooner or later.

I think you made the correct decision at the end of the day as you still appear to be unsure :)

Just won a loverly Revox 'A77' £70..

It landed this morning, brilliant double box packing but what a mess the machine is :( , i'm not happy one bit, it's needs a total rebuild & full cometics/pannels replacement. What i'm not happy about most of all is i bought this on the strength of it, although being silver, it has the brushed metal back pannel instead of the usual grey plastic ones, i can't save this pannel at all as it has a very deep reel impressions cut into it! Being a Mk.I it' needs a few updates anyway mainly the tape path transport has a fixed post guide, the Mk.II at least has a tensionable post.I got it very cheap so not too bad with what needs replacing...I want the later green backed PCB's fitting too.

One relief tho, it's an 1/2 track machine with amazing condition heads, which must have been replacements at some point with it being a Mk.I machine!

Watch for a seperate topic not too far away for a total rebuild of the machine all the way from bare bones chassis upwards.

Have just spent much of the weekend anguishing over bidding on this baby:

http://offer.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&_trksid=p4340.l2565&item=320658730535

That was a nice looking machine Barry, but you've got to go with your gut. If it's meant to be you will have another chance. For me, 2-track gear like that really needs to be used for live or studio recording, for it's potential to be fulfilled. But I have a 2-track pro Nagra so what can I say  ;)

Watch for a seperate topic not too far away for a total rebuild of the machine all the way from bare bones chassis upwards.

I'm really looking forward to that Andr'e. The cosmetic scrapes are frustrating, but I know you'll figure out a way of making it good, even if it means fabricating the replacement parts from scratch :)

Ditton 25's are way inferior to 44's and I've compared both many times in the past.. The 25's had two HF1300 tweeters side by side - I believe for greater efficiency, giving an odd dispersion characteristic and the sound was heavy and lumpy, even on stands. The 44's on lowish stands can sound rich yet lovely with it...

The 25 had no proper midrange unit, it could also be that two 1300's were used to increase their power handling as they cross over from a 12" unit and that might be at a lower frequency than would be ideal for a 1300.

I have never heard the 25, but have seen it written many times that the 44 is a better speaker.

I have some 44's and they are not bad at all, very good bass. I still prefer the treble from the HF1300 / Coles 4001G combination as used in the Spendor BC1, B&W DM4 etc.

This is just about precisely what i mentioned on another thread on here. I have heard the 25s but it was years ago... You really needed to be at ear level between the two 1300's to get a good image, notice that the HF2000 was set between the two but offset to one side.

As long as these criteria are met then they sound fine with just a tad less bass extension than the 66. The 66 makes a mess of the 25 though if you can't get the speaker at the correct level, well even if you can tbh :eyebrows:

Up to recently, 25's were usually very cheap on ebay.

Funny how companies like Celestion and KEF that made some good units, did not always combine them in the best ways. People like IMF, Celef etc. often made a better job.

Ditton 66 would be great with HF1300 and HF2000 as supertweeter.

spendorman
06-03-2011, 16:11
If some Ditton 25's came up cheap, I would try them. In fact I have some spare Ditton 25/44/66 12" bass units and I am thinking of paring them with some KEF T15 tweeters.

The T15's are quite a large dome, so should be a better match to the 12" bass units than the HF1300's in the Ditton 25. I suspect that this would make a nice system. It may even be possible to mount the T15 coaxially within the bass unit. This would be handy as I have some empty vintage Tannoy DC cabinets.

Over the years I have heard many large and impressive looking Japanese speakers with massive drivers and horn tweeters, ribbon drivers and all manner of goodies, only to be bitterly disappointed by lack lustre sound.

Not always. I have heard a couple of good uns' but the majority have been on the naff side and made me wonder, how could they have got it so wrong with all that wonderful ironmongery bolted on the outside...

Beobloke

but to me they actually look like pretty good speakers,

To me they look like an uninspired box with a load of cheap drive units stuck into it, but each to their own! ;)

Lol - indeed. Different strokes, and all that.... Do bear in mind though that I love things like Wharfedale E70s (on the end of a nice valve amp)!

However, I'm not quite sure that what you're implying was where Sansui were 'at' in those days (although I do take Dave's point on board). Had it been 'Matsui', instead, then we'd be in total agreement! ;)

I guess we'll never know if the Sansuis are shite or not, as I suspect no-one here is going to shell out £800 to find out

Why not put a cheeky offer in and move the decimal point to a more 'realistic' place? :eyebrows:

Only because he's also selling them on Gumtree for £75 here:

They'll probably end up way more than that on ebay if its left to run. £75 for 15" Goodmans bass drivers and a lot more besides. Got to be worth a punt for someone.

Apologies to any unsuspecting possible owners or existing owners of the turntable in question (or it's brethren) - my clumsy remark was really just a reflection that kit that usually looks that gorgeous for such a reasonable price (given the condition, it really is "as new" by the looks of it) sounds rubbish - I have no idea how it sounds, so if it is rather good, then it probably is a bargain, as I doubt you'll ever seen one in that condition again...

Given that a TD160 would go for £80 odd on it's own, someone got a bargain. On the bright side, I don't have to explain 3 more boxes coming into the house!

LOL - I've done that before myself!

TBH, dude, you'd had to have really gone some to have outbid me, as I wanted it. And when I set my mind on something......... ;)

Marco.
So more than £1450 then :D

Alex states 1977, it might be more like 1976 as it's a Mk.I :)

Yes, you're right, got confused with some Technics kit I was also looking at - the JVC was 1976-78.

A friend of mine back in 1975 or so had one to drive his IMF Professional Monitors. It was a muscular receiver, very brutish.

You're not helping either, Martin! ;)

Having looked at a few more pictures on the web I'm now wishing I had won the bloomin' thing - blue meters, as well!

Ooooo, I saw your picture Alex and was thinking (drooling actually) 'nice blue level meters' - then I read your comments.... ;)

Blue meters, don't they just draw you in :stalks:

Oh yes indeedy - when I win the lottery, I'm going to buy an all McIntosh system, I don't care how it sounds, I'll just sit and dribble! Their turntable even has a blue meter to show the speed! :stalks:

Andr'e - it could have been 1976, I was guessing based on my year at school.

This is so you know what speed the records are playing. You couldn't tell otherwise - certainly not by listening!

Pretty blue meters!

Indeed, and it's just a tarted-up Clearaudio (who make it for McIntosh)!

Sorry, Alex, I LOVE McIntosh amps, and their illuminated meters, but their T/T is quite simply a fugly, blingy, monstrosity of the highest order, and a rather a rip-off to boot.....

Marco.
