Bargain or not - what a ghastly creation! I love 70s retro but this just doesn't work visually, IMO, though can you imagine a suitable "pad" for it, you can almost smell the Old Spice and Watney's Party 7... :)

If you can get them well away from room boundaries, use a powerful amp with an assertive character (fettled Naim CB or big bad Krell (even a 300 integrated would do rather than Quad for example)) and chunky speaker cables, then you might just get a halfway decent noise from them IMO. This was from the relative period when positec protection was used and a ruler flat response counted for everything and sod the dynamics in the process. The ruler flat response became a mid-bass hump in most domestic rooms and the lack of "verve" could count against it unless you listen exclusively to chamber music and/or string quartets - the 104/2 well sited is tons better and may not cost hugely more perhaps.

They'll cost ya, but some mk2 versions of the JR149's seem well liked and hold good residuals. and many of the non BBC small Rogers' used to get preety fair to excellent reviews too, as did Celestion DL8's and Tannoy M20 Gold and Venus, if you want a civilised personality from your speakers.

Yeah, if they were home made cabs it might be a case of who knows what might be inside, but they seem to elaborate for that. For anyone nearby might be worthwhile going around and taking a look.

Hi Mike

Kinda wish i had now, but i'd have prefered a pair of RAM 200's, but must call it a day now,it's been a lifelong obsession for me, the reason i've had so many speakers..

I dont think its worth 500 notes. I offered 300 but he turned that down. They seem to go for about $500 - 750 in the USA, depending on condition. From what I have managed to ascertain, it is probably one of the ultimate Japanese integrated amps from the late 70's, when building to a price point wasnt in the equation. With a recap, it will still embarass plenty of modern amps.

Hopefully it will not need to much doing to it, if the Legend Mike the valve is right they have Radford trannies and the valve line up is, 4x ecl86, 3x ecc83, 2x ef86 and 1x gz34, so it has all the makings of something pretty good, just hope it survives the jorney, the tuners are not all that, i missed one the other day but it was sans valves and made more money.

Yes but like most 70's kit, it will probably need recaping which will be at least another £200 for decent parts, at the end of the day a piece of kit is only worth what someone will pay, and right after xmas that's steep by anyones standards.

I remember my dad had it after granddad died, but think it got chucked when dad bought a Ferguson music centre from Rumbelows. Wouldn't have thought it was worth 40 quid though!

You can still get new TDK SA but they're not the same or as good as the old formulations from the 80s and 90s. Other folks are producing tape as well; Phoenix Tape Company has produced limited runs of NOS Maxell metal and chrome tape stock. This was well reviewed by HiFi World a while back.

Quality consistency was pretty variable, though, in my experience.

'Thats' came onto the tape market quite late, if I remember, where tape formulation quality was already on the decline, compared to the heyday of the late 70s/early 80s, where some of the stuff from TDK, for example, was truly exceptional...

Alex, you haven't really missed anything. Why? Look at the surrounds of the bass cones. When new, this was a sort of slightly sticky rubber consistency. With the passing of the years, this seems to have reverted to the sheet that it originally was and it's wrinkling in places. The early Spendors and Rogers BBC derivatives suffered too and the bass unit output drops by several db as a result, the bass all but disappearing as well. I don''t believe the DM4's were like this when new tbh.

Seems you're not the only vintage enthusiast! The problem with old decks like the Telefunken or, say, the Studer C37 is that many spares are hard to come by and when they do, are snapped up by well-heeled enthusiasts. Perhaps your Japanese friend bought them?

The bidders were not interested in using them with tape decks. With a modification to change the replay circuit to RIAA curves they make astoundingly good phono amplifiers.

They usually have the brownbook V + number naming code. I thought that having the less common MMS code might give me a chance.

They probably did go to either Japan or Korea. What astounds me with enthusiasts from those countries is the depth of their knowledge of European and US vintage hifi and studio equipment. They seem to have comprehensive data on even the most obscure pieces of kit.

Yes parts for old Studers can be hard to come by but there's a great place in Hamburg that carries parts for and services all the studio Telefunken decks.

Jac,

you're the buyer so you've still got him by the nuts - trash his 100% feedback with a neg, he can't hit back. He's quite clearly taking the piss. It'll be as fun and easy as slapping a blind child. There's no mention of the fact that you can't collect in the listing, throw a few threats around.

I'm not sure it's a mistake ;) The lower the price something goes for on ebay the less the charges (ebay charges) so a lot tend to put up their postage costs as these are not charged (if they can & depending on what section it's in) ;).

You can still get some bargains even if you understand some have silly postal prices but low starting bids :) It's the sellers way of maxing the money from the auction...

I do agree though that if the idiot didn't state postal delivery only then that's a pita  I'd be slightly pi***d off as well.

Oh my gawd! Here's another can of worms.
They do at least three different types of speaker cable that I know about. The one in this advert looks like the one I have except mine has a braided mesh over the top & was terminated in plugs that can be unscrewed to fit spades. It's 14 awg.

Here's what I have:
http://www.expansys.com/belkin-14awg-pre-term-speaker-cable-screw-on-banana-2-4m-152145/?utm_source=affiliate&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=affiliate-window&partner=aw&awc=2959_1297605652_c4bf3076f46743e334d53581848b5b bc

- but I didn't pay anything like £108 for it!
I got two sets of 3.7 metre runs - the first was something under £4 + P&P, the second was £15.

They compliment the interconnects (white!) perfectly & have ousted my long standing choice of cable.

I've not tried the Belkin, but if it's a good cheap speaker cable you're after I'd recomment this-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Microphonic-Audio-Loudspeaker-Speaker-Cable-2-x-3m-/110647146843?pt=UK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL&hash=item19c315795b

That price is for two stereo lengths.I recently fitted some of this and I think it is excellent. In the past I have used Black Mambas, DNM and NVA LS3, and this cable is easily as good if not better than all of those. YMMV of course.

I'd put on a par with the Belkin i/c's in the SPPV stakes.

I think these will go for considerably more than they are now... Anyone like to lodge a guess? £500? Or are they less desirable than "normal" Maxims? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110646580383&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_4517wt_1139

£13.27 and includes speakers and turntable!

Not far from me Andre if you want me to pick it all up for you and bring to Scalford? Not sure how you're collecting it all otherwise?

Have you bought it only for a new outlet? mind you at this price im sure it's worth it even if it is just for the switched outlet lol, a true bargain.

Adam.

Hamish - that was a great find! I reckon you will be in for a treat... :)

Jonboy - oohh - that was a bargain - I have a saved search with emails for "Rogers" on ebay, but don't remember seeing that one come up...

Chris - Why do I imagine Andre will get a stiffy if he follows that link? :eyebrows: No, too new, but they would certainly be a conversation piece!

And finally, the Goodmans Double Maxim only made £330 so my guess was way too much...

Which was vastly more than they were new, but allowing for inflation....

Kind of similar to an original pair of Wharfedale Diamonds going for £150 secondhand at the present. The seller did good ;)

From the original owner too. The junior amps sound very good and I would imagine the speakers would be quite efficient. An amazing bargain, how did I miss it.

I already have the same a cadet 2 and matching pre, excellent amps and the pre's are quite good as well, mine have been rebuilt by my valve legend mate, the amps require a small mod make them really sing, definately a keeper, not heard the speakers but i'm informed there not bad as well, a very nice little set up indeed

Ebay is getting stupid in terms of pricing and Google searches linking to "us" raving about certain items doesn't help I reckon.

Woofdale Diamonds aren't really worth more than £20 these days and anyone paying £150 for a product that may be well bettered by some Richer Sounds specials for £120 is totally mad IMO.

Indeed, but the Richer Sounds specials are likely to be . . . modern day Wharefedale Diamonds. Which are really quite good :)

We need to come up with a cunning plan to discuss eBay goodies on the forum then :eyebrows:

As I said Andre, I have "Rogers" as a saved search, as well as anything newly listed under vintage separates, and I didn't see it either - strange.

The '771'/'772' & '776'/'777' amps were superb.

Seems quite expensive to me. Having said that, they were serviced in 2001 and may have had new caps and whatnot, plus a new battery for the pre.
