Not heard them with these drivers, originally these were fitted with Lowthers and were out of this world. Fantastic dynamics, detaail and texture. I'm reminded that I also heard them fitted with some of Doreen Jordan's Bandor units and they were nearly as good, but cheaper. Only problem is the minus zero wife acceptance factor : lol:
That's some seriously useful info there Paul. I just wish I had the space for them. Would make for some good talking points over a few drinks with visitors.

Marco, Like you I'm blessed with a wife who enjoys the music and likes having a good system or two/three in the flat. In fact the only time we have ever disagreed on anything to do with the HiFi is when I said I was considering selling the big Lockwoods as I had received a staggeringly good offer for them. I said we might get a pair of IMFs or TDLs as she had liked the active TDL Studio 1Ms we had before. She just looked at me and said she would prefer to keep the Lockys. I have said it before..... I'm a really lucky bloke.

These kind of poorley described adds can turn up some real gems and at crazy low prices as most people tend to ignore them.

If the person selling them knows nothing about hifi - eg they were my late husbands - they can be exused for not knowing what to say.

I just picked up two spare mid range drivers and two spare tweeters for my 66's for less money than the model number so for me this type of add is what catches my attention, bring em on. :eyebrows:

You see some crazy descriptions in local papers with items for sale.

An American seller all_your_music has some quite cheap vinyl which includes postage. A while ago I got Ellie Goulding's album on vinyl and looking at what they had tonight I ordered a couple from a band I've never heard of - Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited. They do retro instrumental. The cost was less than £18 for the two of them.

Marco

I'm sure that happens, dude. However, fortunately, I've never had that problem.

On the odd occasions I sell hi-fi gear on ebay (I'm much more of a buyer than a seller), I ensure that all the relevant details of what I'm selling are contained in the ad, which will increase its appeal to genuine enthusiasts. I'm also a trained and experienced salesman, so know how to word adverts, in order for them to pique people's interest, and to cover myself for most eventualities... ;)

As such, every piece of audio equipment I've sold on ebay has gone for very good money - often way more than I expected!! :eyebrows:

Furthermore, because I'm efficient and professional, in terms carrying out every aspect of a sale to the highest possible standard, I've never had anything less than superb feedback (effuse praise) from buyers! Basically, I always treat folk as I expect to be treated myself (with consummate respect and professionalism) - and it works :)

Marco - Your method gets the best price for the seller.

Surely we are after the best (lowest) purchase price we can find.

Good feed back is based on how satisfied the buyer is with the goods he thinks he is getting, not on the sellers sales pitch. The more you say the more likeley some one will chalange your description. There are con artists out there that do exactly that, hoping you will give a partial refund to avoid negative feedback. I've come accross this several times, I usually respond by asking them to return the goods for a full refund and they back off. Its sad but to some extent you have to cover your arse when selling on Fleabay.

If you do searches on Fleabay using alternate phrases or single words it sometimes turns up items that wern't caught by the main and obvious search criteria. I think of all the different and shortened names I could use to describe an item and search all of these individually, I have found some real bargains this way that slipped through unnoticed and I picked them up for 99p or what ever the starting price was. There was a fully working and clean Croft pre amp with phono stage went through two weeks ago with a starting price of 99p and no one bid on it. The seller re-worded his title and the relisted item brought £275. It was collection only at the other end of the country or I would have bought it for the hell of it.

Poor sellers make it a buyers market and it gets interesting. :D

Hi Ken,

I totally understand and appreciate where you're coming from, which in my case, however, is slightly different :)

Marco - Your method gets the best price for the seller.

When I'm selling something, that is (quite understandably) all that matters to me. Nothing else is even considered!

Surely we are after the best (lowest) purchase price we can find.

In an ideal world, yes. However, if by selling something for a high price on ebay (because I know what I've got and what I'm doing), increases the market value of that item, and puts prices up, then I'm afraid that's just tough titty! :eyebrows:

The same goes for 'keeping shtum', on forums, about a superb piece of vintage kit, which as yet has been largely undiscovered, for fear of increasing its desirability (and thus price). Bugger that... My view is that my fellow enthusiasts deserve to know how good it is, and so I'll proceed to shout about it from the rooftops!

I've benefited hugely myself in the past from that experience, so similarly, I like to 'share the love' whenever I discover a hidden gem. In essence, I almost consider it my duty to inform my fellow audio enthusiasts of the existence of 'high SPPV' vintage equipment. *That*, for me, is WAY more important than fretting over increasing the market value of things, which if it's going to happen, will happen anyway, regardless of what I do.

YMMV :)

Marco.

Anyway, as genuine and diehard audio enthusiasts, I think it's much more our collective responsibility to inform other like-minded people about potential vintage 'hidden gems', than by doing so, fretting over the possibility of increasing prices on the second-hand market :exactly:

Whatever happens, in that respect, happens....

I was tempted by this 1930's BAF amplifier but missed out. Probably a good thing as I'd have been on an eternal quest to find another. I have seen one other some years ago in poor condition with valves and field coil speaker missing. BAF amps usually used the field coil to provide bias so it's good to see it still with this one. :)

A pair of what may be Tannoy York speakers. The seller doesn't know how to check. The dimensions and cabinet construction look like Yorks, which means these will likely have 15" Golds in or possibly Reds (but I'm not sure those terminals would be right for Reds). Could be a serious bargain. Shame I don't have the room.

Amphenol Tuchels in both round 3 & 5 pin or the multi (8 - 32) pin were widely used in studios using German bruanbuch spec equipment. My Telefunken M10 connected to its record and replay amps using a mixture of both types. I've also seen Studer C37's with them as well.

I would expect European equipment to use Tuchels (my Nagra reel-reel machine uses a mixture of Tuchels and XLRs and, come to think of it, so does my EMT 930), but not necessarily on UK equipment. I assume it was EMI's use of the Siemens amplifiers that prompted the use of Tuchel connectors. Still think XLRs are superior though.

I think those may be a later variant. They originally came with a heavy 10" pulp coned bass driver which sounded rather soggy in their speaker and sounded rather soggy to me when I tried a pair in a project speaker. Long time ago now, but I think they may have been made by Focal.

Those SD1s are mine. The tweeters are Visaton RHT12S and are notoriously fragile anyway even without someone buggering around with the crossover, inadvertently shoving bass into them and frying them, which is what had happened to these.

In three years of searching I've only managed to acquire one working tweeter and, frankly, I'm sick of looking at the speakers now, hence the auction!

Very interesting Adam... Hmm I'll have to look into the tweeter issue - Are the crossover's kosha now or still in a "fiddled with" state ? I currently struggling to know what to do, I've got a pair of 103/4's & there are both 104/2's & R50's locally at good prices and now your selling SD1's... AARGH, Too many choices !!! :D

Well, originals aren't common, as you can gather by my fruitless search! Visaton do a current model called the MHT12 which I suspect might be a suitable replacement with minimal tweakery but last time I checked they were about £160 each.

The crossovers themselves are now back as they should be once more. The previous owner upgraded some components but in the course of re-assembling, managed to put the positive tweeter wire in the wrong place, turning the high pass filter into a low pass one! I managed to get hold of the original crossover schematics and rectified this, and the one working speaker sounds very nice.

Too many speakers? Tell me about it!

Having thought about it some more I'll let these one's pass.

I think the repair will be just too costly for me at the moment although doubtless worth it. I suspect eBay.de is the best place to look for Visaton drivers what with them being German & all.

Best of luck with the sale :)

With the TAR-DIS connected to your phono stage ahead of your amplification, you can use your favourite tonearm and cartridge combination to respond in real time to your digital music playback."

Does this make any sense, or is it just me?

Just a buffer stage?

Not fancy trying some Monacor? Amazon have some from £21.

Does the original have a hole burnt in the mylar?

If it was something simple (like a blown fuse or a component in the crossover) then it would be worth the punt, but if it is a fault with one of the panels then that would far more serious and repair probably beyond the capabilities of the average DIYer.

Hope the buyer manages to fix them: I've always had a soft spot for Magnaplanar speakers.

James, simply copy the "url" at the top of the eBay page and past it into your post. Thus, for example, the EMT 948 turntable for sale on eBay has the url:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/310990686276?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649.

A truncated version will appear in the text and it will appear underlined, so it will be active: anyone clicking on it will be taken to the eBay site and to the item for sale.

How can binoculars be 'not tested'? I can understand it with something hi-fi that needs plugging in to an amp or needs loudpseakers to be able to hear it work. I'm told that there are strange people in the world who actually don't have this sort of kit just lying around the house, weird though it may seem. But Binoculars? What? The seller didn't have time to take a quick look through them and confirm that things did indeed appear to be closer?

Martin the seller new damn well they were buggered, they were his own from new, he wasn't a dealer selling stuff on.

He had unscrewed the lenses to clean them and cross threaded one of them when he put it back together it has a very very fine alloy thread and it was stuck, wouldn't come off. When you looked through them the image was out of tilt as one lens was at an angle you couldn't focus an image.

I did manage to fix them, It took a bench vice and a chain wrench to get the thing unstuck, boy was it tight. Went back together without a problem and I still have them a couple of years on, work perfect and are mint. But I shouldn't have had to do the work.

Strange that they are up there in the North East same as mine were. Anyone in that neck of the woods snap them up - they leave modern speakers for dead.

And you thought we were all peasants up here…

A new speaker stand I'm working on. One or two issues with stability to be sorted out.

Interesting to see these again...

I believe these came from Keith Grant's Home Studio last summer. I visited and purchased a pair of Yamaha NS1000M from his Son who was having to clear our his dads home studio after his unfortunate death.

You can see the Urei's and the bottom of my Yams in a pic on this web page of the Home studio. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/aug12/articles/keith-grant.htm

Fad my arse - best CD player I ever heard by a fair margin - providing it is the broadcast version which that one does appear to be. That's assuming you like neutrality in your cd player as opposed to something designed to sound like vinyl going through valves.

LOL - yes it is an excellent price. If I hadn't already spent the entire year's hi-fi budget by the end of February I would snap it up since my broadcast version isn't working and the other one I have needs mods to the power supplies before it will sound as good as the broadcast. I'm trying to be satisfied with less....

I've been watching that one for a while now Barry.

It started out with a BIN price of about £5.5k and has been coming down little by little and this time round up for auction. Very tempting at the current level but I suspect there will be a last minute frenzy. NO PX25's with it either so that needs for be factored in too. I also think it will be almost impossible to find another so it's really for the dedicated mono enthusiast.

I do like the style though. it's not disimilar the the pseudo Western Electric amps that Line Magnetic are producing

http://www.toneimports.com/lmaudio/lmaudioHome.html

Coincidently the LM1 amp uses a 212 triode, the same as the 4212E's in the amps in my previous post
