N1, is it really really strong lumens wise? I'm looking for a cheap daylight flashlight, this could be it! :>

2200 Lumens quoted. It's blinding even in daylight.

Bit naughty really as it's not Hi-Fi. I just had this LED flashlight arrive from China:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201064708253?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

My God this thing is powerful! Truly blinding intensity and zoomable too. Well made and recommended.

Ah, what it doesn't tell you in the blurb. I've just discovered this has five modes. Press to switch on, press again lightly to reduce power slightly, press again lightly to reduce power slightly more, press again lightly to get intense disco type strobe effect, press again lightly to get continuous Morse distress signal and press firmly to turn off. What a good bit of kit!

But this...Power by: 4x 18650 3.6v/3.7v battery

Would rather use standard AA/AAA batteries.

Those 18650s are the type used in Li-ion power tools, although different spec ones for power tools, ones with very high max current. Excellent cells for hifi I'd think!

Although I've heard some cheaper chinese copies just don't last and are rubbish. Here's a vid on how to get some genuine good ones from an old laptop battery:

Micro Seiki CD-M2 ! Weighs a ton and has balanced outputs via transformers. Considering a top condition Marantz CD94 MkII can fetch near or over £500, £700 seems a bargain for the TDA1541A lover. Emporium hifi too.

I used to use ARC'101' in a couple of Active system {A&R Cambs/Nytech/Quantum} but my terminals were not like that, they were 4mm sockets where you could just insert the X-Over pods if you wanted to use them.

My thoughts exactly Geoff, the transformer alone would be £30 in the UK.

220v input won't be an issue for most but I wouldn't try using it if your mains runs close to 250v as mine used to before the leccy company pulled their finger out... I complained that my mains was 256v for 12 months, they finally sent 2 blokes out to the local transformer who tinkered with it for 3 hours & now I'm a rock steady 238v.

A Marmite speaker maybe ?

Well....as all speakers are imperfect transducers, and we all have different tastes maybe all speakers are marmite.
(But some are more marmite than others?)
I liked them very much, anyway, and considering what these are on offer for, what that gets you in modern speakers, and what anything similar might cost now....billy bargain in my book.
Erm, I do like JBL's too - have a pair of lightly modded 4410's, and they're keepers...

Faulty from those guys means it was marked as such when it came in and it hasn't been tested at all. So that wouldn't be the cause of it being marked faulty. I've bought stuff from them before and it's been fine, working ok but buy as if faulty.

The one being sold is a later model, like my own, you can tell by the writing

I nearly sold mine a few months ago as it wasn't being used, but luckily I have suitably sensitive speakers for it and "got real" and started using it again, and haven't looked back since... I wouldn't swap it for anything now...

Thank goodness nobody offered to buy the Oto when I had it up for sale on here a few months ago.... phew...

Some interesting snippets from the net:

Nikko Audio
A division of the Japanese company Nikko Electric Works that specialises in manufacturing electric and communications equipment, company established in December 1948 and the audio division was closed in the early 1990's. Their line of hi-fi was noted for excellent value for money and in particular their electronics (i.e. amps and tuners) were considered extremely impressive on a value basis, however the company never got the hang of the glittery marketing tactics that other Japanese brands used and only gained limited distribution, mostly confined to North America and Australasia, the audio division was also know as ASTI Pacific. There is an highly unusual twist to the company's history, so unusual that I am going to include it here even it happened after the company left the audio business, when the Asian markets started to slump due to the "Asian Flu" of the mid 90's Nikko's chairman and principal shareholder Goto Tsunemoto was one of the first Japanese CEO's to try western methods to in responding to the slowing sales, he initiated a series of layoffs that were done without consulting employees and unions in stark contradiction to local tradition. This backfired spectacularly when the employees used a novel method of revolting, as collectively they owned just over 10% percent of the company due to bonuses and such, and under Japanese commercial law a shareholder with 10% or more of ownership can request a liquidation of the company the employees forced the company into bankruptcy protection even though the finances of the company were basically sound, so in 1998 Taunemoto-San was forced to resign from the company's board and it was taken over by a investment company controlled by the Rotchilds later that year. Please note that the company never made televisions or suchlike, the sets and video recorders that appeared with this name in North America were sold by someone that appropriated the trademark.

Although I can't speak for the complete line of Nikko, I can say that during my tenure there, we have made some awesome products. The quality of the front panel metal extrusions and the metal enclosures were much beefier than the standard receivers of that era. The Alpha III MOSFET DC amp was only 80wpc but if you had efficient speakers, it was the cleanest amp you have ever heard. If you wanted more power, we had the Alpha VI, which was rated at 300wpc (for a measly $1400.!) that was great for driving speakers like the AR LST or the Bose 901's. Both amps had high slew rate and excellent square wave response while maintaining extremely low THD and TIM distortion. The Beta III had a direct coupled phono preamp coupled with its high speed circuitry. The Gamma V FM tuner had selectable IF bandwidth with amazing tuning accuracy. We also created the ATD1, which was Nikko's version of the Audio Pulse's and Advent's time delay processor. I also presented a white paper at the AES convention titled "Application of gyrators in graphic equalizers" for the development of the inductorless graphic equalizer called the EQ1. A little history behind the company:

Nikko started off as a circuit breaker manufacturer and their main customer was JNR (Japan National Railroad). The company chairman's daughter married a true audiophile and the chairman started the audio division to fulfill his son-in-law's interest. The son-in-law cared very little about marketability of the product and basically, it was his pet project to crank out audiophile type products. I certainly am not knocking the son-in-law because he truly had golden ears and he designed products like the Alpha V, which was a true class A 100 wpc power amp that sounded awesome but it was not marketable due to the insane price tag of the product. Because the revenue from the audio division was so small compared to the circuit breaker division, we were eventually phased out to consolidate Nikko's efforts in their main business. By the time we developed the 19 series (NR-1019, NR-1219, etc.), we could not compete against the giants like Marantz, Sony, and Pioneer who had an immense price/unit advantage over us. The strange thing about Japanese manufacturers in that era was that they were stolidly against outsourcing the manufacturing outside Japan. Perhaps, if we subcontracted the production to Taiwan like NAD did, we would have had a fighting chance for survival.

With warmest regards,

Tom Ishimoto
Northridge Electronics [Designer]

I remember when the Nikko amps first appeared in the UK in the very late '60s. £175. Well worth it in my view. What else could you buy at the price that even comes close? Nothing!

I know some on AOS are not impressed with them, but mine just sounds gorgeous on my system. As good in its own way as any of my other cartridges.

Even if true, so what ? When I bought a pair of Wharfedale E70's couple of years back the seller told me his mate who does Jamiroquai's gardening bought them off him for £200 when he upgraded... The travelling without moving album sounded rather awesome on them so I'm inclined to believe him 'cos it sounds crap on every other speaker

Yes, I remember these. They came onto the market around 1971 and were very expensive. A high quality speaker and very advanced for their time. One of the first to use soft dome drivers. I don't recall any maker using a soft dome midrange before Braun. Certainly a bit of a rare 'Classic'.

A little pricey in my opinion - last Braun LE710s I saw (Ok, might have been LE 610s) sold for about £60.

Meanwhile I bought the Canton versions from the 70s (same design, dome mid too - just updated drivers with round plates rather than the square ones) for £25 including delivery from ebay. They are doing good service connected to a Sudgen A21 and look pretty with their real wood surrounds (not the white version).

Canton continued to make the Braun designs after Braun stopped making them - but any collector wants to see the Braun name on the back!

That original paper sticker costs about £100, the speakers £20..

Blimey - identical to the unit I have! £100 was optimistic, though, given that mine started at 99p about 5 years ago and, although I bid £50 or so on it, I won it for.....99p! Went to pick it up and it was in such superb condition, I gave the bloke £30 for it. The outer case is a bit faded but the mixer genuinely looks like it's never been used.

The arms are indeed Jelco but they have quite a short effective length and aren't as sturdy as the SA-370 types. The decks are also belt drive.

It's a very good unit though and the turntables have electronic auto-cueing - you drop the arm on the record and hit the button, and the turntable winds forward until the music starts and then stops and winds back a pre-determined amount, then sits there ready to go - when you hit the go button it's up to speed as the music starts.

Might be worth a cheeky offer if anyone's interested as it looks like it didn't sell...

1. The unfortunate choice of brand name.

2. The way they try to make a big deal of bog standard components... I've not seen something so full of junk parts for a long time

I've no idea what they are on about with that !? Its showing the output transistors which are actually Fairchild, not Toshiba.

Howwa man James… Don't you know a pair of Mission 770 Freedom Vs when they're staring at you? Regularly advertised by Doug Brady ( with blazer) in Hi Fi Answers at the time - late '80s. State Of The Art for their time with Super Eliptical Hornloaded Tweeter Homopolymer-loaded (!) bass unit with magnesium basket with both drivers being used in the flagship 737 Argonaut, time-aligned and 91 dB efficiency.

Yes it should say 'FREEDOM' in red across the top of the protruding section of the baffle board..Thing is i always prefered the first '737' with the silver hammertone fronts & Audax tweeter.

Cheers Chris... I've since discovered they were made by MB Quart whose tweeters were also used by Epos.

The Grand Wazoo
25-05-2014, 12:28
The plastic grille is like the one on the Epos of the same era, so that would make sense.
I clearly remember that the very first version of LS7t had a small hole in the top of the dome - what I refer to as a 'pierced nipple'. However, everyone who I mention this to has no knowledge whatsoever of this.
Nor have I seen one like this since way back then.

Mr Kipling
25-05-2014, 12:44
Yes, I can remember a pair reviewed in which the dome had a hole in. It's the only design I've seen it featured.

Not heard them with these drivers, originally these were fitted with Lowthers and were out of this world. Fantastic dynamics, detaail and texture. I'm reminded that I also heard them fitted with some of Doreen Jordan's Bandor units and they were nearly as good, but cheaper. Only problem is the minus zero wife acceptance factor : lol:
