Conoisseur BD1 with Audio Technica AT1005 arm. Well worth grabbing just for the arm. Looks exactly like my first decent TT, could even be it for all I know. Remarkably good sounding combination.

Hmm. Original I suppose, using 'jerry cans' as speaker cabinets. Likely to resonate a bit I'd have thought. The loft environment looks somehow familiar. Is it an AOS member's den?

FFS. Random use of Caps lock, cant be bothered to rotate the photo's & wants £75 for some knackered jerry cans with broken mission midbass drivers fitted... Complete & utter muppet.

Worst thing is, he's probably proud of his "design" I don't know why but that listing's really annoyed me ! :D GRRR :punch:

Hi Geoff
Bigger what Reel to reel ? The '3000x' & '6000x' looked simular, the '6000x' was obviously their big machine back in 1970.. At that time the Tandberg badged Thorens 'TD150' was the turntable in their range..

Why is it, compared to other countries, so much faulty and non-working items are listed by us Brits? What does it say about us?

I think it says that we're industrious, willing to have a go at fixing stuff and not willing to give up on a broken item and so waste it.

Perhaps other ebays have fewer faulty items because they just think it should be chucked and a new thing bought instead?

If you look at German ebay for example, so much more stuff is in perfect condition and listed with a high price and takes months to sell (ok, that might be because they don't have reserve prices or at least didnt used to for some odd reason). Supposedly faulty items have been massive bargains in my experience.

Mr Kipling
23-03-2014, 21:17
When I had a look on Germany, France and Canada eBay I was just surprised at how little there was. Have to say virtually all the hi fi I've bought from eBay has been bought as faulty. About time I got round to start fixing it.

Macca
23-03-2014, 21:23
The Germans are organized so if something goes faulty it goes straight to a workshop and gets fixed. The Canadians recycle rather than sell the broken kit and the French just stick anything broken in the barn next to a rusting 1952 Citreon and leave it there until it once again becomes part of the earth. Everyone in France has a barn, for preciesly this purpose.

Is working again now - the drop-down to choose "newly listed", "ending soonest" etc was missing..

Without that field selector it probably would return a "0 results" message. Guess that was the problem somehow.

Another thing, ebay's layout has returned to the usual one and not the new version with multiple drop-downs at the top of the search result page. Perhaps it was that new layout mucking up?

Description: "Have you tried writing out something with a pen? It takes bloody ages, and results in cramp. Enjoy the hand written word and writing in general with this unique retro piece. On two sides of one A4 sheet are the lyrics to the theme tune of the hit show "The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air", written in signature English with a Uni-Ball ballpoint (better than a bic). It should be pointed out that this is not the original lyric sheet written by Will Smith but my artists interpretation, hence the crossings out. I have scanned it upside down so the winner can enjoy this item properly for themselves. Good Luck!"

Just won the bidding on one today Bev. £22.50, local pick-up, not too bad and it's multi-region which will be handy. I'll check it out as a CD transport, doubt it'll come close to my Meridian though.

Here we go. Just set up the DV-717 with the telly I picked up off eBay today, all working nicely. The 32" Toshiba LCD TV was £82, so that's £104.50 spent on this setup for my den! Not bad. Haven't tried it as a CD transport yet.

You might be surprised.. Apparently the memory buffers which are standard in DVD players make a good difference and not something Meridian would have implemented back in the 90s (practically no transport/CD player with a dedicated CD mech does). There are some studio players from back then which do (for instant start) but not sure they are implemented in a way which benefits sound quality.

My Meridian 507 is not from the nineties. It's maybe nine years old, possibly the same age as the DV-717. What buffering is used, if any, I don't know, but it sounds excellent.

Oh I see, thought I read earlier it was a 200 series. 507 does indeed use buffering of some kind and uses a CD-ROM drive rather than CD specific mech.

Some DVD players sound excellent as transports too. Also though DVD players depreciate a million times more so the £22.00 won't be a good judge..

From the 507 User Manual:

"The 507 uses a precision CD-ROM drive, with the data read asynchronously and then triple buffered to isolate output timing from the mechanics of the drive. The data is also dejittered using very precise master oscillators to give a clear, open, authoritative sound. The digital signal is decoded using the latest 192kHz 24-bit dual-differential Delta Sigma digital-to-analogue converter, combined with a discrete class A output for superlative audio performance."

Now if you had a pair of Quad 'II' which can be had for £600-£1,000.00, you look like someone better even though they don't sound very good imho however the pricing & because cos they have hip valves you rather more of a propar enthusiast arnt you? .. This attitude gets right up my back.

Not sure though how much of that attitude exists..

I see it more as: "This bit of kit is going for high value, therefore it must sound good because I can't work these things out for myself!"

I've got some expensive kit but instead of setting it all up, I keep listening to my £80 ebay purchase integrated, some 90's job that no-one's heard of.

I don't necessarily distance myself from that either.. fully caught up, at least in curiosity even if I can't afford all the expensive stuff I'd like.

My integrated is a Higher Fidelity amp Model 2K3, part of their Century Series (so it says on the front). Apparently Van den Hul had their top of the range monoblocks as his reference system once upon a time. Bought it on a vague recollection of a photo from an old magazine plus it had distortion on one channel which I correctly guessed to be power down on one voltage rail of an Class AB amp - was just a fuse. Sounds very good!

I know i would rather have the 303 because of the heritage and the 1 thing it sounds good to these ears nothing more nothing less..:D Even love the 33 pre even thought people give it some slick i don't really care its a PERIOD classic to me and thats why i can never bring myself to part with it....if you ask many experts the did test with the quad II and the 303 and they were difficult to compare as they both sound as good as each other.

Upcycling is a term for recycling by turning it into something new in some way. It's a real term been used for years in the retro furniture and retro clothing world (probably started in the clothing word first).

Anyone not regularly buying Elle Decor or such mags is probably out of the loop! I admit it, I look in Elle Decor in the shop from time to time... 90% of the time it's naff.

Really? Or do you mean maximum when pushing the limits of your ears? I've run one from a 12V battery with thin wires and 1A fuse and they never got warm nor blew the fuse. My kind of loud isn't that loud as I'm fairly near the speakers in my room and set up.

I mean with enough leeway so that you don't run into clipping, which T-amps are prone to doing as they have very little headroom. I built a 14V 2.5A PSU for mine (watch the 12V and 14V models) and I reckon it's just sufficient. Only just, mind you.

The '402'power supply was there if you wanted to use the '102' as a stand alone Pre amp if used with a different brand of power amp.. However it's the Dual Active '207' that is the star but if you can get a pair of '205' mono blocks they were good.. Maybe you could upgrade the op-amps in the '102' reap improvements!

Here's a '102' with '402'.. I bought all my Quantum gear new in the mid 80's..

Just won these for £8. KLH Model 22 speakers. Not that well known over here but well liked back in the US. Worth having just for the cabinets at that price, I'm hoping the drivers are OK though. Really good little speakers these, I have a pair that I'll never sell http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281309069745?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Don't discount them due to the spring clips they are really high quality... The cabinet is cast & really heavy, inside you have a paper midbass & silk dome tweeter with a proper crossover that uses films in the HF section - I was very pleasantly surprised with mine.

Pah...

I bought a whole Tandberg 3000 series system off a guy (still got it all, various bits need fixing, got some corrosion on the front - the tuner's doing my system proud though, limping along but sounding great!) and the only reason the speakers weren't with it was because they were chucked. Chucked because of rotten bass drivers, that's it!

Defo those mid range drivers are completely wrong! A pair failed to sell last year for £250 with correct drivers: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290878918740

So I'll be keenly watching these.. get a complete system perhaps?

Griffin Studio 85 actives.. bet they're pretty good.

Yep a clearout:

Just won these for £8. KLH Model 22 speakers. Not that well known over here but well liked back in the US. Worth having just for the cabinets at that price, I'm hoping the drivers are OK though. Tidied up, these would make a nice little pair of vintage speakers. They are probably equivalent to the AR6, except these have 'everlasting' doped cloth surrounds. I'll collect in the next day or two.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KLH-Speakers-Model-22-/371038461854?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=W7tvrYmdLP%252FmJfQn%252FBfbAaCngHI%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

Oh well. I picked these up yesterday and one bass driver is dead. Never mind, I still have a pair of rather nice cone tweeters to add to my collection. Anybody need an 8" KLH bass driver?

Although by the look of some of the photos, he's been doing some running repairs in the garden with a soldering iron and belt sander on a long extension.. Surely you'd want to hide that wouldn't you, give the impression they were always that perfect?

A bit of departure, but anyone looking for excellent A/D D/A conversion with a bit of 8 track storage thown in, this Genex 8000 has great convertors! Think you can attach to a PC via SCSI (old school). They're from the mid-90s but still the convertors are well rated. Think max spec is 24/96 which could be good enough for many ripping their vinyl and all they want.

It's a small 'wall wart' lead type low voltage socket. Similar to what you get on the Graham Slee phono stages and the Musical fidelity X series units, but pretty small.

I only bought it to use with standard AAA batteries, they last ages with LED torches. I suppose you could use rechargeables.
