No they don't. The A series tweeters are now unobtanium as I understand it. The F series do look similar but the drive units are not remotely comparable.

I suspect they are a lot bigger than they look in the pictures. How big is your motor? having said that if you get there and there is not enough room you could always dump some of your other gear in a layby - the back seat for instance :)

I like your thinking  They are 40x60x34cm & 30kg each so quite large... Thats a 12" bass driver. The cars an Audi A3 so hardly the tardis !

... We'll find out on Sunday ;)

Which model ? There are 3 variants... "K", "K2" & "SL"

K is fun, K2 is surprisingly good, SL is poo.

I agree with James.

I'm not keen on the SL, which I believe was in production up until about 1980 if I recall. That Phillips tweeter is not very subtle. The previous K2 from the seventies has Goodmans own DT3 dome tweeter which is OK. I'm quite fond of the Magnum and Magister K2 variants, good honest old speakers with plenty of wellie. While you're looking at those check out the Wharfedale Dovedale III as well, similar design and just as good.

They're actually quite nice speakers but very prone to foam rot on both bass and midrange drivers.

On the other hand, they've got a 5 LED power meter on the front - who cares what they sound like?!!

Hmmm, I got sucked into the Troughline nonsense for a while and also paid silly money for one with a stereo decoder. I played with it for a long time but in the end concluded there was far too much hype about the Troughline, much of it generated by Noel Keywood of HFW.

I sold mine on and I'm very happy now to be using my relatively vintage Creek 3140 which does everything the Troughline never did. If you're into Troughline, £30 seems about right to me.

I was given a Quad FM valve tuner. No power supply but a friend, Nigel Pearson of Loricraft, ( and well known amplifier designer ) constructed a power supply for me. We used a Maplin module for the decoder.

Performance ? It ' out Quadded ' my FM 4 and totally upstaged my Sony ST3950F tuner. Downside? Limited range on the 'dial '. I couldn't receive Classic FM...

Was it 'better ' than a Troughline ? Who knows ? It made music and R3 sounded sublime.

Mr Kipling
07-01-2014, 20:52
Noel Keywood thought it quite good, but not as good as a Trough-Line. There was a feature on building a ps for it in the diy section one time.

Excellent stuff! Good Hi-Fi in the Netherlands will have some surrounds that will fit. Don't forget to buy new dust caps so that you can cut the old ones off and shim the voice coil whilst replacing for best results.

Some vintage stat hybrid speakers from Shackman. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VERY-RARE-SHACKMAN-DYNASTAT-AS7-ELECTROSTATIC-LOUDSPEAKERS-REROMANUS-AUDIOPHILE-/191027663530?pt=UK_AudioVideoElectronics_HomeAudio HiFi_HiFiSpeakers&hash=item2c7a22d2aa

Shackman Dynastats were my very first 'hifi' speaker - not at all bad sounding, actually.

Looks are, err, subject to personal taste. :)

the last pair I saw on ebay a couple of years ago went for £50 so it's a shame that these start at £199.

Thanks Geoff. I really appreciate that.

There is one or two points you could help with.
Is it likely the glue holding the dust caps could be heated to remove them? And how do you centre the new one? Does the surround get attached to the cone first then the chassis?

Thanks.

Beobloke
09-01-2014, 20:56
Basically -

(1) Remove all traces of the old surround and clean the mounting face well with Isopropyl alcohol. Do the same with the cone but do not soak it if it is paper.

(2) using a scalpel or craft knife, cut off the old dust cap. Do this VERY carefully so as not to cut the voice coil wires

(3) Position shims between the pole piece and the inside of the voice coil to centralise it

(4) Stick surround to cone

(5) Stick surround to chassis

(6) Remove shims and stick new dust cap on.

I generally spread the task over a week of evenings, as it only takes ten minutes or so each day that way, and also ensures that the glue is dry from each step before proceeding to the next - I do (1), (2) and (3) on the first evening, (4) on the second, (5) on the third and (6) on the last.

Hi Stephen.

I'd not recommend heat near speakers at all. If the dust caps are sound just leave them be, but if they really need replacing, I'd cut the bulk of the dome away leaving just a strip where it's glued to the cone and gently slide a scalpel or small craft knife blade along under the strip to separate it from the cone. You can centre them by eye, but if you're very fussy, you could measure down from the edge of the cone in three spaced positions and lightly pencil mark where the dust cap is to go.

Yes, I always bond new surrounds to the cone first. Use Aleene's original Tacky Glue for everything, it's the best I've found. Before bonding the surround to the chassis edge, BluTak it in several places in the position you expect it to go and check for free back and forth movement, i.e., no coil binding/rubbing. Once you're happy, then remove BluTak from three equally spaced positions and glue the surround at these points with a small dab of adhesive and let it partly dry, but not so much as to stop you pulling the surround free if need be. Recheck for free movement, if OK continue and glue the rest down. Just use a small art paintbrush. If binding, carefully pull the surround free again, you may need to slip a scalpel under to do this and start once again.

I see Adam beat me to it as I was posting.

His observations are largely the similar to mine. I'd just say that I don't think shims are likely to be needed if the rear spider is undisturbed, as the cone will remain centred at this point.

Or use a 1.5V battery, reversing the polarity a few times. Centres the cone nicely before the glue dries.

If you are referring to the Shackman's they are not ribbons and therein can lie a problem. Alex developed and electret condenser type electrostatic panel, like an electret mic it retained it's polarising voltage. The diaphragm is made from tissue paper that was soaked in copper sulphate and then dried. When I was a kid and just getting into audio I would regularly cycle to his shop in east Barnet and see the sheets of material being assembled in to the "Dynastatic" panels, which were also sold as stand alone units. I had a pair of the speakers, several of the top units and a pair of Quad 11s he had converted to use KT 77s. The problem is that the diaphragm is hydroscopic and the tissue rots unless kept in perfect conditions. After Alex died Volt obtained the rights to the unit, but I don't remember them selling new ones.

Oh gawd, I want that. Sadly, we are knee deep in unused bits so I can't justify it. I used to have the 600 and it sounded very nice indeed. However, its the design and the way the controls worked on this series that made it stand out for me. I loved mine and it only went when Quad stuff came into the house. If I was in the UK I'd be tempted in spite of the clutter.

Would you buy these? Tannoy 609 speakers "upgraded with SEAS tweeters". How the hell do you upgrade the tweeter on a dual concentric using separate units? I notice the rather strange description, he obviously hasn't a clue what he's talking about and there's some major ranting in his terms.

Not bad at all... Very good value - I guess they don't attract much attention due to being so damn ugly !

Someone's written an article on that model here: http://www.highfidelityreview.com/inside-out-sony-ta-f444es.html

I don't think any major changes were made in the mk2... They got rid of the copper & upgraded a couple of opamps.

More fantasy pricing. £500 for a pair of Goodmans Maxims? I've bought these at boot sales for less than a tenner a pair and they aren't great anyway.

I heard some for the first time last month - I was surprised at how good they sounded as I have an unfounded bias against paper cone tweeters. Sounded quite alive and fast but obviously bass shy. This was on the back of an Exposure IV Dual Regulated.

Still, not worth £500! £250 is dubious too, which is more normal pricing.

True, but probably not including the travel costs for so many people - looks like collection only in scotland somewhere.. I bet having a small holiday home up there could be paid for by bringing audio bargains down to London..

They did use some good drivers. I like the M series with their Philips dome mid-ranges as per the Tandberg Studio monitor and Meridian M1. Good source of spares for those much more sought-after speakers..

Something for the vintage dCS completist! There will many people in Japan and around with their older dCS studio gear still in use at home, 952s and 972 combos .

dCS 992 Master Clock (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171216828057) - can even be linked to GPS clock just in case and with a seemless transition from that to internal clock when signal losses occur.. Pretty rare beast and probably ok pricing for the opening bid (a new Apogee Big Ben Master Clock will be just as expensive and not have as many features)

 You got it? I thought that was a great bargain although I have one too which cost me about the same after selling on the SME Improved it came with, but that was a back-door deal after I saw it had been won by someone overseas and it was strictly collection only (always worth getting in contact even if you miss an item!)

We'll have to start a 240v TTS-8000 club! Mine doesn't have a lid.

I figured these were more in the £800 - £1000 range, at least sonically, comparable to nicely plinthed SP10s etc.

Just realised it only ended yesterday - they must have had a non-paying bidder as it was for sale back in Dec by the same people - you got lucky they didn't pay!

I bet it will be working but need a clean (probably a new strobe bulb). Those cheap-as-chips people just get in loads of discarded items from tips, recycling centres etc etc and sell them on without testing (in general) I've bought some good stuff from them, all working (although I'd avoid their crates of vinyl! Mostly only fit for charity shops and mine were damp).

Be careful if you take the platter off - there's a strip of ferrite coating around the rim underneath that contains the magnetic X-Tal signal for the speed thing. You don't want to chip that off, nor magnetise it in the wrong way.

And don't lick your fingers after handling the mounting plate - it's made of lead!

Maybe get someone to start it up with a variac and current draw meter just to check nothing untoward is happening when powered up.

Nice, but keep an eye out for the AR5, it was the rather rarer model between the AR2AX and the AR3a and in some ways is better than either. Great mid definition and transparency.

There again, a pair of Magnum K2s or Dovedale IIIs is just as much fun.

Best hope (if you've some spare cash) is to buy a second deck mounted in one and sell the deck. Often whole arm/deck/plinths are priced so the plinth is essentially free. Just means you have money tied up whilst you sell the deck on again.

Not necessarily anything wrong with it!

Those people get litterally containers worth of recycled electronics and electric equipment from lawnmowers to boutique hifi. They have so much it's just a case of seperating things out and selling them on - often no testing done unless they know it's of value and give it a quick power up.

Think they are officially local government sanctioned recyclers (recyling via re-use).

I'm already watching it  But in that poor condition without remote & of unknown origin even if it does play discs I wouldn't pay more than £50.

Nat is correct, most of the stuff they sell is fully working if a bit scruffy but that's the gamble you take... I'm not much of a betting man so tend to err on the side of caution. Quite often faulty stuff sells in auction for only 10-20% less than a fully working example - I don't know what loons are buying it but they are :mental:

I don't know either. The price that some of it goes for just seems mad to me. Mobile phones seems to be the worst. Some seem to think everything has a value. I've seen someone selling an i-phone 3 with the screen smashed to buggery and the upper 1/3 bent back at an angle of about 30% - and there was bids on it! What can you say!?!

These Meridian M10s are very nice, even the Meridian style guarish rosewood they used to use a lot. £1200 start not so bad as it includes a 201/204

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121260292225

Great deep and fast bass and very dynamic and slammy. I found they didn't image as I like but I have a small room, small by their needed standards.

Great potential for swapping those T33s tweeters - Meridian upgraded the M10 tweeters to M100 tweeters for customers (probably dry of ferofluid now) - for ScanSpeak 95000s as the 90000 range appears to be an attempt to replicate the T33 (judging by impedance curves etc) AND the bolts are in the same place. Have to widen the opening on the tweeter plate though slightly..

My experience with them wasn't inspiring. The R50s at the retailer sounded excellent, the R40s OK.

But your brain has to work harder to read something that is not written normally (correctly). Good writing should read without conscious effort.

God knows mine needs a workout every now and again.

I see this joker is still asking a ludicrous £150 for his HORRID 'boot sale' Amstrad speakers! Terms like 'complete shite' spring to mind.

We might be surprised with some clueless, retro-seeking trendy looking for some big retro speakers for their trendy, slightly ironic decor..

Have you ever tried reading Feersum Endjinn by Iain Banks?

No.. From the title it sounds like a phonetic task. "Fearsome Engine?"

Generally I've never got on with Iain Banks' writing style, kind of not visual enough for me.

They would go beautifully with this Amstrad system:

As an aside, I'm intrigued to know what sort of person uses a non-working Amstrad system with all the control knobs removed "for display in our flat"! :D

Have to agree. I have tried several times to read Iain Banks' books but have never enjoyed them and abandoned the attempts. Perhaps being bought up on the 'classics' like Clarke, Asimov, McCaffrey and Herbert have spoilt me for lesser mortals.

Lol. So there is fake Amstrad now? Those Chinese will copy anything.

Yes though the bass was at times surprising for so small a box, could sound shouty with the wrong amp and a less than perfect front end!!

Totally unforgiving monitor sums em up maybe?

I find it hard to believe the caps are at fault :hmm:

I doubt it as well, there's a few well known flaky transistors in this model, my guess would be them, however get it for a couple of hundred quid, be prepared to chuck another £200 for parts for the restoration and you have probably the best vintage integrated on your hands, also the last one I restored sold for £900.

A friend had a pair of the first AE1s driven by Naim 135s and fronted by a Xerxes with Koetsu Black. To describe the system as 'in yer face' would be an understatement! :stalks:

Nice - and with the wooden cheeks too. they always add a bit of class. Good one stop amplification solution if a bit too pricey on the BIN.

All of his gear is richly priced but they always seem to sell ... Also, I wouldn't be expecting anything much via 'best offer' if my enquiries were anything to go on in the past ...

He also has a TA-F870ES priced at £800.
