I've just got back with the 44's, set them up & made a cuppa... Initial impressions are good :D Bottom ends a bit "full on" but I have been using Kytes for the past week so my judgement is off...

Well that was short lived  One of the HF2000's has decided to go open circuit  Time to upgrade those tweeters to some Seas methinks...

So... are the grills going spare?

One of them will be yes... The other working tweeter is mint so I'll be selling that to fund the Seas tweeters + recap. To be honest I already mentally marked the grill "for Martins Gales"

Equally interesting, I have removed both of the HF2000's & fitted some spare Vifa D19's I had in the parts box and aside from being around 3dB too hot they sound bloomin' identical ! Apparently the crossover frequency from mid to tweeter in the 44's is 6kHz so the tweeters aren't doing an awful lot anyway... Any idea of the crossover frequency on the GS401's ?

Any idea of the crossover frequency on the GS401's ?

I'd heard those Vifa tweeters were a good replacement. 5kHz crossover frequency.

If you PM me your address I'll forward it... Only one left to find now eh !?

Some clever chap over on the diyaudio forums has calculated the necessary crossover circuit for the Seas 19TFF1 to give a well integrated & flat frequency response. This can be achieved whilst keeping the original inductor which is nice... All I have to do is increase the 6uf cap in the HF section to 10uf, add 15R in parallel & 1R in series with the tweeter.

I just need to work out the cosmetics as I don't want a silk dome with plastic faceplate sitting there... Even if its under the grillcloth I'll know its there ! :D

That would be worth a punt at such a low starting price - the guy clearly doesn't know what they are. The AR 3a sounded bloody good at the time. I think the tweeters were prone to blow so I'd want to know they're working first.

If I had the room for another pair of these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251349695940&fromMakeTrack=true), I'd be snapping them up - they are extraordinary speakers and sold for well over £3.5k so at the starting price they are an utter bargain. Pretty rare in the UK - I've never seen another pair for sale. You'll need a big van and a strong friend to pick 'em up though!

They are more commonly found in the hifi racks of Polish and Russian music lovers. So I suspect that this one was brought over to the UK by someone in Poland. It's not uncommon for audio equipment from Poland to now show up in the UK. A few years back I bought a Technics pre and poweramp and B&W 602S3 from a Polish guy who had carted his whole system with him to the UK. I sold the speakers to a IT specialist from India who was over here on a contract. And he has taken those speakers back to India. Those speakers are now seasoned travellers.

istari_knight

Hi guys, how does the Goodmans Minister SL compare to the rest of their range?

It is the worst of the Magnum range Filipe.

Magnum K = Best build quality but cone tweeter is poor off axis [my personal favourite.]
Magnum K2 = Slightly inferior build quality but arguably the best sound with well integrated drive units.
Magnum SL = Poor build quality [compared to the others but average for the age] The Philips tweeter is poor & spoils them somewhat.

All IMO/IME :)

EDIT: I'm sorry, I read that as Magnum not Minister... I have no experience of these but I'm sure someone will be along shortly :D

Hi guys, how does the Goodmans Minister SL compare to the rest of their range?

The Minister SL was very much a budget speaker. It used a roll surround version of Goodmans cheap 8P PA bass unit and as a midrange it used a cone driver that they actually used as a tweeter in some designs. The tweeter is another cone driver of the same size. I've used the various Ministers and all I can say is that they work, but they aren't wonderful. If you want something British from the same era that sounds good, look for a pair of Celestion County or even better Ditton 15 speakers, KEF Chorales are nice too, but going up in price.

They're Bang & Olufsen type Ks. Predecessor to the better-known Beolab 5000s from the 1960s and designed to go with B&O's low powered valve amplifiers - they don't like much more than 25 watts up 'em apparently.

I've not heard a pair but my good friend who is guru of all things B&O rates them firmly in the "meh" category, and opines that the decimal point in that starting price needs shifting to the left somewhat!

Is this really a serious listing.

£445 for a pair of old speakers that the seller admits knowing nothing about. I've never heard of them, but they look like budget seventies fare to me judging by the economy tygan grille cloth and the elliptical main driver, which is almost certainly a cheapo EMI unit and they're not even in great condition.

Nice amps these & from experience very hard to damage... They have pre out/power in jumpers on the back that if removed you wont get any output so that might be the problem. Cap coupled output like the Quad 303 with a warm, lush, euphonic sound. I'd buy it myself if I werent skint :D

The seller his off his bloody rocker. He describes the speakers as efficient @ 82.5 db and in good condition.

While these speakers are a true classic for near-field monitors they are very far from efficient, especially as they are rated at 15ohms.

Brilliant little speakers. After setting up Celef, Stuart Tyler went on to create Pro-ac, but I don't know why he didn't conyinue the Celef brand. We used to sell a lot of these, and I suppose they provided the original inspiration for what became the Heybrook HB2. There's a lot of similarities, particularly the use of a resistive port to lower and broaden the reflex resonant peak. Stuart used drinking straws where Peter used a rear-exiting plastic tube with small holes drilled in it to the same effect. Both speakers had a similar smooth and extended bottom end.

Those are the cheapest banana socket/terminal plates around and still available from China. Take it from me those are not upmarket speakers, but who knows? They may sound fine.

Wow, for £12 I would have thought it worth a punt. If they are rubbish, not much lost and if quite good you might get £13 for them:)

I may be wrong but I have never seen La Scalas like these. I heard the proper La Scala's MK II's once and they left a real impression on me and if I had the room for a pair I'd get a pair tomorrow.....

A pair of Tannoy Devons for £700?

Is this an example of the ever rising values of older Tannoys or is this seller just being greedy. A pair of the bigger (and better) Cheviots from the same series is maybe worth £550 to £700 these days, so why so much for the Devons. I had a pair briefly and have to say they are my least favourite Tannoys out of the HPDs I've owned.

I realise the quoted frequency range of a speaker system isn't indicative of how it will sound but considering the La Scala contains a 15" woofer, a bottom end which rolls off at 53hz is not all that impressive :eyebrows:

They're horn loaded, Dave. You need enormous horns to go deep in the bass and they are relatively small enclosures. Don't expect earth shattering vibes. They will kick you in the chest, though.

Nice! That Phillips tweeter is a bit fierce though, it's the same one Goodmans used in the SL series. The speakers are well worth going for all the same.

Celestion screwed them to the outside of the baffle on this model whereas other manufacturers would secure to the inside face of the baffle, thus recessing the majority of the tweeter body ;)

Ah, I did wonder as on the pair I had, they were fitted from the inside as standard. Didn't realise there were different versions.
