As a collector's item I suppose they're of interest, but the T15 tweeter and B139 bass unit did not make a great pairing, despite KEF's perseverance with the setup in various models. The sound is a bit thick in the lower mid, to say the least !

Interesting. I haven't the foggiest if original tweeters can be found, but I'm sure a suitable alternative should be available. These have to be worth getting at that money (they'd probably take an offer anyway). I'm due down there in a couple of weeks, but I'm not sure they'd be for me, they're huge and weigh about the same as a small car.

My poor old mum passed away in the Cottage Hospital a few years ago. Anyway, on a happier note my brother lives in Gillan near Manaccan. As I say, I'm due there soon for a spell. Got plenty of family and friends in the Lizard area. Any chance of a listen to your system and a cuppa? :)

Geoff please don't think me rude if I say not at the moment. The mother in law passed away recently & its been pretty hard going at home... Ordinarily you'd be more than welcome & if your down again in future then by all means, just not at the moment :)

I think Frank [Effem] lives on the Lizard ? I had hoped to attend a bake off at his place a few years back & buy Jerry's SD Acoustics SD1's... Alas it wasn't to be.

Whatever you do Shane don't buy these for their sound quality potential. They're OK as a collectable I suppose, but they will sound dire. If I recall correctly, they use a version of the early seventies 'Poly Planar' driver which worked in a rather similar fashion to NXT speakers, but badly, They sounded horrible.

Yes, that's the original studio version. There was a 'domestic' one with more conventional looks. This was a very highly rated amp in its day and still is by some.

They have what look like spatter marks on one cone and glue marks on the other cone, both of which are a bit faded and the grille cloth is non original by the look of it. I sold a tidier pair on eBay not long ago for £390, which was about the right price.

I do remember these vaguely.

They are likely to have been made for Audio Dynamics Corp. (ADC), by an outside company. The tweeter looks rather familiar, I believe its a version of the cheapo unit used by Bolivar (JBL) and Studiocraft (Bose) amongst others and it did not sound very good, I had a pair of loose new ones and also a pair in my Studiocraft 220 speakers. These look as though they've been partly doped with bituminous material, probably to damp the coarseness. The bass driver may be a KLH or AR unit by the look of it, probably decent enough. I'd give these a miss though.

17-09-2013, 23:27
I was initially drawn to them as they reminded me of AR4xa's... If the cabinets were the same colour & they were local I'd try them but with that p&p I'll leave it to someone else.

You really ought to publish all this knowledge in a book Geoff, I'd probably buy a copy

The AR4XA are a far better bet and you'd get a pair for about the same money. There've been a few pairs on eBay recently. I had some running with a Rogers Ravensbrook amp not that long ago and the combination sounded very sweet. The AR4XA is a very durable speaker, the doped cloth surround bass drivers just never seem to pack in and the little AR paper cone tweeter sounds decent. Don't forget, these were rated at 100 watts, even back then (early seventies).

KLH Model 9 is worth a look too.

 I got a *mint* pair of 4xa's locally from a retired BBC engineer for £5 a couple of years back, used them with a Marantz 2215b now that was a sweet little system I'd like to put back together !

Wouldn't mind trying a pair of 4xa's!! But they will have to be fitted with modern speaker terminals though!! I notice the 4xa's have a switch for increase etc, what does that do?

istari_knight
18-09-2013, 00:03
Much the same as MS Pageants, you can boost or cut the high frequencies. I recapped mine with Soviet PIO caps... Gawd they sounded silky smooth.

You should keep a second set of speaker cables just for old/oddball speakers, I've got some Van Damme 0.75mm that fits every vintage amp/receiver/speaker perfectly although only just in some cases !

Is cutting the high frequencies with these switches a good thing?

istari_knight
18-09-2013, 00:09
IMO its definitely not a bad thing, it just changes the resistor value in series with the tweeter. Far worse are the 'rheostats' fitted to the AR2ax & AR3a which are really crappy variable resistors, the internal resistance wire turns to green corroded fluff after 40 years... Quite often you'll see those models for sale with no output from the mids or tweeters usually its just the rheostats are knackered.

This is the seller I bought my Hafler DH220 from. Apart from having a few marks on the top plate it was actually in pretty decent nick. All the heatsink fins were in sound condition and the unit arrived very well packed, and considering it was a heavy old beast I thought £8.99 for postage was very reasonable. I paid 90 quid for the unit and after a little elbow grease it cleaned up very well. Below are two pics, one of the unit at their depot and one with the Hafler in situ in my system as it was then :)

This is not strictly Ebay - but thought you might find it interesting anyway.

I recently discovered there are a few vintage hifi shops in Sofia (Bulgaria) BION!

Here are a few highlights, note these are prices in BG Leva. To convert to GBP divide by 2.3. (or 2.5 roughly)

Here I think I have found an example of eBay at its worst.... I present you with exhibit A: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DYNACO-IV-40-WATT-VALVE-MONOBLOCK-UNTESTED-GARAGE-FIND-/190906249280?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiF i_Amplifiers&hash=item2c72e63040

Whats wrong with that you ask ? Well... The seller states "RECENT GARAGE FIND AND TOTALLY UNTESTED" & "MAY OR MAY NOT WORK. IVE NOT TOUCHED IT WHATSOEVER,AS FOUND."

Got that ? Good. Now I present you with exhibit B: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DYNAKIT-40-watt-valve-amplifier-2-x-EL34-with-book-for-repair-Quad-II-lookalike-/370900019649?ViewItem=&item=370900019649&nma=true&si=9ujbBOgqwgw9c2wysuupqDk7Big%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

I firmly believe its the same amplifier, check that stain spot on the top of the transformer... Note this honest seller states "fault on mains transformer primary"

WHATS ALL THAT ABOUT !? Have I completely lost the plot or is someone trying to make a quick buck at someone else's expense ?

having owned many vintage Celestions, I reckon it's glue overlap. Celestion were a bit slap happy back then and not too concerned with cosmetics. The brown deposit around the bass cones is glue too. As it's old, hard and probably oxidised, I think you'll find it scrapes off fairly easily.

Thanks, James, but I've already looked at those. They're for the T27 and the ruler in the shot shows them to be about an inch in dome diameter. That's not wide enough to clear the HF2000 suspension.

Perfect for a second/third/bedroom/kitchen system... Sounds seductively sweet with a decent pair of acoustic suspension / infinite baffle bookshelf speakers.

I've got the smaller siblings [APM22ES] which are good, I expect these are equally capable and will be a bargain if they stay under £100 IMO.

Must be the "high end" of the bottom! They were made by Goodmans actually and probably sound OK for a budget speaker.

A decent looking pair of quite rare Tannoy Audiometric speakers. These are NOT dual concentrics, they have a 12" bass driver and a 2" pressure unit (tweeter). In Liverpool.

What's the betting somebody pays silly money for them thinking they've got themselves a great pair of classic Tannoys. Personally I'd say anybody paying more than £100 would be daft. They might just be worth having for the Chatsworth 'lookalike' cabinets I suppose.

Yes, the older Yamaha receivers were very nice. Bit Pricey in my book though.

I've just got back with the 44's, set them up & made a cuppa... Initial impressions are good :D Bottom ends a bit "full on" but I have been using Kytes for the past week so my judgement is off...
