Has everyone seen the new epay fee policy? From September 4, "Final value fees will be charged based on the combined value of the item listed plus postage."

Although no explanation is given, it has been suggested it is to put people off charging exorbitant postage. But if someone is charging too much for postage of course you have the option not to bid. Now, all of the honest sellers are being penalised - nice one ebay. One effect of this could be a lot less lower value items being sent abroad.

Of course the only real winners in this are the ebay shareholders ...

Yeah I was annoyed with eBay when I read that... Don't know about other sellers but I'll be putting my p&p prices up to absorb it :(

Cheeky move by them though.

I don't use EBay for selling anymore. I'm not alone in this because my two best mates have done the same. They buy more stuff than I do, and they hang onto less, so it has taken a lot for them to give up.

I won't fill up valuable space with anecdotes, but we have all had a number of "horror stories" that made us decide that EBay was not a safe place for us to sell kit anymore. We've all had several "try ons" ranging from fraudulent non-receipt claims, to blatantly opportunistic "item not as described" chargebacks, to pictures of different items used to claim courier damage. In each case, EBay just seems to take the buyers side and you end up losing some or all of the money. Given that you can't leave negative feedback for buyers now, the fraudsters are free to carry on unchallenged.

Add the fee hikes to this (used to be just over 1% on value over £50), plus the enforced Paypal use which gives them another chunk of our money and I just hope EBay eventually sees a competitor arise. I'm amazed the Googles and Amazons of this world haven't moved in, but I live in hope.

I hardly sell anything at all now, period, because I really enjoy collecting the stuff. If I do let something go though, I'd far rather see it go to another forum member who will appreciate it and look after it. It's also great to visit the forums and see stuff you've passed on featuring in other people's gallery threads and being fully enjoyed.

We are funny folk, in that we often argue, even fall out over our hobby and opinions, yet we still have far more that unites us than divides us. I might be certifiable but I really do care about our hifi gems and I'd far rather see the remarkable items that we all love, stay in safe and appreciative hands. Forums are the best chance of success in this respect IMO.

What gets me about these is the finish. It may be a bit bashed now but how come such good speaker uses what look like vinyl wrap?? My white van man speakers look just as good including matching scratches.

It is unfortunate that Klipsch use these rather cheap finishes on all but their 'Heritage Range'.. I have heard these Klipsch even though I own a pair of Heritage Range and to be honest if you can get over the rather cheap finish they do sound superb. If you want a Klipsch with a good finish you have to go for the Heritage range which has super wood veneer finishes. My Heresy's are a Walnut veneer finish which looks great

So DON'T be swayed by the finish just simply listen to them and decide....

They sound superb to me.... :)

I had a 63 MKII KI cd player and thought it was totally overrated really... my Meridian was so much better, and with an outboard DAC even better still..

I am now using a Pioneer DVD/CD player again into an outboard DAC and that is still better than the 63 KI.. I think it's ok as a player but bettered without spending loads more

Yes they were like the NSU. The Hilman Imp was rather similar in style and I believe there was a sixties Panhard with the same fluted sides.

Did you ever see a Corvair Monza. Very pretty car. They were all killed of by the fuss Ralph Nader made about cars with swing axle rear suspension.

Ralph Nader certainly put paid to the Chevvy Corvair, but he wasn't responsible for the demise of the grand-daddy of all the horrendous rear-engine swing-axle concoctions, the VW Beetle. Curiously, that honour goes to the NSU Ro80! By the early 70s, the Beetle was years out of date, and VW lacked the imagination to replace it with anything more adventurous than the awful Combi or the even more awful 411. At the same time, tiny NSU had taken a great leap into the 21st century with the Ro80, but had bitten off more than they could chew and were forced into bankruptcy by development costs and terrible warranty problems with the Wankel. Into the breach leapt VW, and bought the wreck. Unknown to the world, NSU had also developed a more conventionally engineered little brother to the Ro80 which VW released a few months later as the VW K70. Excellent though it was, it didn't set the world on fire. The same could not be said for it's direct descendant though. That was the Golf, and the rest is history. So all your Golfs, Passats, Scirrocos and Polos aren't really VWs at all. They're NSUs.

Incidentally, I may be wrong, but I believe NSU and BMW were originally Auto Union and VW were started as a commission to Ferdinand Porsche by the Third Reich. The auto Union Badge is similar to the Audi badge, I'm not sure when Audi became part of VAG though.

Much of the German industrial manufacturing base was broken up into what were regarded as viable units by the Americans and the Brits after WW2, supposedly in order to get the German economy back on its feet. Which is why we've ended up with the manufacturers that exist now. Not to mention the various engineering designs nicked by the British as 'war reparations' and put into production over here in the late forties. Bristol and Frazer Nash car engines, BSA motorbike engines, Webley and Diana air weapons and much more.

Partly right about Auto Union / Audi ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto_Union ), and right about VW, although the design of the Beetle was pretty much a crib of an original idea by Hans Ledwinka of Tatra

it is a shame about the Wankel, it is a great concept but was to difficult to build reliably back then.

Frankly - i would have done the same. i would have believed in the future of the wankel and got stuck with the repairs too.

Couldn't agree more. It's a lovely idea, and Mazda developed it brilliantly to give it reliability. Only trouble is that the shape of the combustion chamber makes it inherently inefficient, which is why an RX8 can barely manage 20MPG, and can be bought for about two grand, returning to the theme of bargains on Ebay...

So that is why they are no so efficient.... i wondered about that. given the conservation of momentum, i thought they should have been more efficient. but they never were... thanks for the illumination.

I would have thought that the squish action of the Wankel engine would help combustion but I guess not. Still a great engine design, though.

The theoretical ideal shape for a combustion chamber is a sphere because it has the minimum surface area for energy to be lost through heat conduction. That can almost be achieved in a conventional piston engine using inclined valves and bowl-in-piston designs, and it's why twin-cams are such a good idea. If you look at the combustion chamber of a Wankel at the moment of ignition, it's a long, wide, thin flattened banana shape with a massive surface area which is about as far from ideal as you can get, so unless they either come up with ceramic rotors and housings which don't need cooling, or they reduce the cost of petrol to £1 a gallon, it's always going to be a non-starter.

Which is why Triumph motorcycle engines and Chrysler 'Hemi' engines were powerful for their time, using a hemispherical combustion chamber. But combustion chamber design has changed a lot since, with the evolution of multi valve designs..

Couple of nice WD amps here, both from the same seller in Ely which isn't far from where WD was when Peter Comeau owned it, so I'd hazard a guess that the seller is associated in some way. Don't quote me on that though. He can't spell integrated either, which I always find unreasonably irritating.

Ah well, November the fifth is on its way. At least you'll have some wood for the bonfire! :)

Seriously, you've got some work to do to get these sorted out, one non-standard mid unit and the vinyl skin is lifting in the centre of the bass drivers. Unless of course you bought them for spares. The good thing is, parts do crop up on eBay quite often. Best cure for the vinyl on the bass units is to remove it leaving just enough attached to form the roll surround and glue the dust caps back on. Very punchy speaker the Magister!

Yes, plenty of work Geoff. I've got the Magnums and fancied the bigger version. It's a bit of fun and I'll just take my time. I did get the vinyl to go back on a Magnum driver using a hairdrier. It lifted again after a while though. I'm thinking maybe hairdrier plus spraymount this time. If not I'll give your idea a go. I will need to see, what, if anything, works first. I imagine the Bass driver would be the most resilient wouldn't it?

The earlier Goodmans drivers had just the surround in vinyl anyway, the full skin came later, so it will probably work fine with the skin off. The cones are of high quality felted pulp and self damp well anyway. Yes the bass driver should be the toughest.

Yes, I saw that. It's a nice item for its era, probably on a par with a Rogers Cadet II (ECL86). But I expect it'll have noisy controls, a bit of hum, very tired caps, phono sockets that need changing and it has antique speaker terminals and it's going to be silly money. But I'd like it!

CCleaner is fine, useful too. I run it once or twice a week. If you don't want to use that run 'Disk Cleanup' in system tools under accessories in your programs. It'll clean up the clutter on your computer. It's part of your Windows package and will do no harm.

More like 33 years ago.. It's in bad condition but if you don't mind loosing all the printing on the front it could be refinished.. You never see the matching '730' pre amps turn up tho!

I've been looking for a portable DAB radio, mainly to keep me occupied in the kitchen with BBC 6 Music. I just got a Pure Evoke 1S, which is going for £57 incl. P&P (manufacturer refurbished, 'as new' condition). RRP is £99.

More nutty pricing. Ditton 22 speakers at £349? the guy's taking the piss! A very clean pair may just be worth £50 as far as I'm concerned. I wouldn't want them anyway, but I expect sooner or later some dummy will buy them.

Crazy pricing indeed, I sold my good[ish] condition 33's for £120 & that was in a 99p start auction, no reserve & willing to ship worldwide... I guess those 22's may fetch around £70 in a similar situation.

It's not that long since I used to get these at boot sales for about £3 a pair. They're not exactly brilliant anyway.

There's not much wrong with the EMI drivers. I used them a number of times in various projects. B&W added damping pads to the 10x6 driver in the DM1 in order to address a minor beak up mode. They didn't do the same to the 13x9 unit used inthe DM3.

I have a pair of DM1's in rosewood, and despite the cluttering in my house I'm tempted to get these aswell, they're a real bargain, these speakers are very nice indeed and I'll never part with mine! Can't understand how they're always flying under the radar, them being the 1st monitor model from B&W, this from a collector's pov. :stalks:

Huge Vitavox speakers, just listed with 99p start. Watch these go through the roof! Any bets as to the final selling price?

I reckon around £5k (assuming they have the right drive units in). You could probably run these on about five watts of SET valves and get a great sound.
