I snapped up these yesterday. £472. That's about 2/3 the cost of a single new one...

They'll be replacing the tweeter on my NS1000m's eventually, that'll require a new cabinet for them though. In the short term they'll be run as super tweeters, taking over above 10k where the Yammies jump off a cliff.

Interesting to see the Technics mentioned. I bought a clapped out Garrard Zero100 and what should I find but a Technics EPC205 in it. I had one in the 70s and I loved it. At least I think it was that number!! The mind is failing . Is that the one that had the rave reviews back then?? If so, I'm a bit chuffed. If not, I'm still a bit chuffed as this one sounds terrific!! You can get generic stili for around £30, so I will try not to let someone destroy this one.

No movement here today! :/

Well, received a couple of days ago one of Istari's tips - a pair of NAD 8225 that I've been lurking for a long time. In the meanwhile I've been testing them thoroughly with different amp's/receivers and FFS I'm gobsmacked with these little fellow's.

On decent open-frame heavy stands and 11in away from the rear wall - *MIGHTY IMPRESSIVE* - is all I can say. Can't think of how many speakers I own(ed) but I'm out of praises for these, really!

I bought my brother's CD4Se about 18 months ago. He had it from new. Pretty decent player IMO. I bought a CambridgeCD5 to compare it with. The 4SE was miles better. Not the best player I've had, but definitely 'one of the good guys". The laser went on mine and I carelessly broke the flat ribbon connector when changing it. My first ever such cock up. It had gone very brittle, but still my mistake. Still an enjoyable player that I hope crosses my path again one day.

The crossover had a constant impedence of 8 ohms. Not sure if Kef tried the idea around the same time. There's a posting by the son of YHF speakers on PFM. He gives a few details.

Adrian Orlowski of Hi Fi Answers was quite a fan of them.

I think Kef's implementation was known as the Kube. I could just be talking bollocks here though. Anyway, the idea was for the amp to see a constant (more or less) load.

This is great CD spinner - I know, I have one myself :eyebrows:

It's sound is not unlike the earlier Wadia and Krell players, with s-p-a-c-e between the sounds so everything is separated out into it's individual component parts. Great to listen to for hours.

It's in better nick than mine AND it has a remote control, which is very rare.

"a tad pricey" is an understatement. I gave away a pair of the better and bigger T225s a while ago, I'd bought them at a boot sale for £18 and passed them on to a friend. They sounded OK but nothing special. Nowadays I'd say a fair price for a mint pair of T115s is £50. You can get a pair of far nicer DC1000s for less money .

Hi Shane, I've heard this model two or three times and it does sound nice because EL34 amps generally do, but it's not a great EL34 amp, it's been done a lot better.

Of course, there are ''some'' ''EL-34'' & other amps that will better the AI S500 !! I will always like the AI S500, you will have to spend a good amount to better it IMO.

Anyway, drop by and see me sometime. We'll get some sounds on! Geoff.

Technically the 330c is worst but it has a very sweet sounding power amplifier stage much like the Marantz 2215 which in a medium>small room with mid>high sensitivity speakers could be all one ever needs. I can highly recommend the 930 which is a beast !

I know nothing about this model, but these tiddlers would have to be pretty damn good to work out at over a grand a pair, used (plus the odd one). You'd get a pair of far more useful Tannoy System 1200's for maybe less than that! I know where my money would go.

More sensitive, they'll go louder and sound really nice! Plus, they'll sound like Tannoys. What's the imaging going to be like on the B&Ws with that driver arrangement? I'm sure it won't matter for their intended use in theatres, but in domestic Hi-Fi, probably not so good.

No, the BD2 was the integrated unit with full width steel top plate sporting the SAU2 pickup arm. I've owned many of both. I still have a BD1 tucked away (and enough spares to run it for a century). They can sound very good indeed set up properly.

A very long time since I heard a pair of those, but my recollection is that they were pretty damn good, as were all MS speakers of that series.

I'm about to change my avatar again as nobody recognised the Altec 'Voice of the Theatre' speakers. Lets see if anyone gets this one.

I recognised them - didn't know I had to acknowledge the fact! :eyebrows:

Highly unusual and don't sound too bad... Just don't try to "upgrade" the valves like wot I did & end up melting the transformers :D

Yes. Corona. I've heard them a couple of times, beautiful treble. God knows what the price is though. Hope they're a bit more durable than the Ionofane.

Guess I'll have to find another avatar to test people's knowledge now.

I had one of the "Yarland" EL84 amps when they first started appearing around 2005 & it was a cracking little amp, think I paid £129 delivered... Fast forward 6 years I bought one that looked very similar but was branded "Aria" & it was complete tripe. I think they use the same chassis with completely different innards depending on the "manufacturer."

From all of the different cheap Chinese valve amps I've sampled I'd say any made by Yarland or Yaqin vary from good to very good, any made by Music Angel, Music Angle, Aria, Sheng Xiang & Bewitch are crap.

Oh and that one in the link is definitely £475 overpriced.

I don't know if you are familiar with ADC cartridges Jon, but the XLM III is superb. All the top ADCs over the years had a 'family' sound, very detailed smooth and transparent, with deep bass. I've owned the XLM III and it gives many respected MCs a good whipping. The sound, surprisingly is very close in character to the Denon DL-103R, which is no slouch itself.

I thought the LS3/5a are supposed to have some kind of midrange magic and everything else crap :D

They do... At the expense of everything else IME. Wouldn't pay more than £200 for a mint pair but that's me.

The Exposure XXV ''RC'' Integrated amplifier. Looks like a good piece of kit!!

That's just mental.. I've got a mint pair of Sterling LS 3/5a's which, due to not being very old, would knock spots off those condition wise and possibly sound wise too, and I'd be lucky to get £1,100 for mine

IIRC, two Exposure IV power amps have sold for £250 recently on EBay. The preamps usually go for, say, £150. Sometimes even less. That's still £100 less money for a big pre/power than the integrated 25 (and a IV will blow the snot out of it). Exposure integrateds are vastly inferior to their decent pre/powers, so I just don't get the pricing. The integrateds are still decent amps, but things like the IV and Dual IV are right up there with the best available. They are the real bargains IMO.

You know its funny. I tried to buy a Myst TMA III and just missed it, tried to buy spendor speakers and just missed them too.

I watched the smaller Exposure amps go by, thinking i would buy the one with remote control...

So what do you do after missing a bunch of stuff? you just bid like crazy so you dont miss the next one...

I really thought it would go for around 300 or 350... Well i admit it - i over paid... feeling a bit donked... :donk:

Anyway i hope it is a good amp and i will be happy with the sound - i will try not to have buyer's remorse until i hear it at least!

I had a TMA3 back in the day and borrowed an Exposure x for a home dem. I bought the Exposure speaker cable but the amp was way behind the Myst for me, so I returned it.

Over the years, a few exposures have come my way. I've not had a 25 at home, but I have had a few tens fifteens and twenties, as well as the supers. Still good amps, and the 25 may just have that extra something the others lack. They are all still bargains compared to the Nait!

So what do you do after missing a bunch of stuff?

Check "Completed" and see what they went for previously. Then you know the 'right' figure/s
If none in Completed watch that brand for a while
A bargain will come up eventually or you adjust expectation

I once heard a useful definition of 'good advice': something that usually know you should do, but somehow just don't ;)

You are right of course! in the moment, when seconds were left... perhaps it was human competitive instinct?

Another favorite: 'Insanity' - doing the same thing and expecting a different result:mental:
