Like the look of these. Can't find anything on the 'net about them:

They look a bit rough & ready to me Stephen and that seller certainly knows how to fill a page with waffle. I agree with Andr'e about the bass driver.

Why's that Andr'e? I had a pair and they do look interesting, but I wasn't too struck by the sound quality.

Leak 2060 speakers, a bit like having a pair of Yamaha NS-1000s on the cheap. These Leaks have quite a bit in common with the Yamahas. Powerful, tight bass, plenty of detail, nice mid and top. OK the Yams are better, but the Leaks are pretty good.

Interesting speakers the Sequerras. Not heard them but, as I recall, you bought the little main speakers and could then add a pair of subwoofers and/or the supertweeters as the mood took you. Shame there's only one tweeter unit - I imagine finding another would be something of a challenge.

No you don't need an FAC for any air rifle up to 12 ft lb power. Some (FAC only) models can be ordered with power exceeding that, but most UK market models fall below. Trust me 12 ft lb is plenty. The old BSA Airsporter that some people insist was the most powerful you could buy (my Webley Mk.III was just as powerful) was around 11 ft lb.

The Grand Wazoo
28-06-2013, 22:48
I think what Julian meant was that for some of the Sheridans, you need a ticket rather than for all air weapons. That would be correct as I remember some of them going over the 12 ft/lbs.

The HW 35 was an oversized, overweight, awkward great lump. I didn't like mine either. The SIG 401 I had at the same time was ten times as good. I had the Original Model 50 and Model 35, both nice but not hugely powerful and tricky to take apart with that ball sear engagement mechanism. Long time since I used real firearms. I've kept my old Meteor as it's powerful enough and accurate.

They have good quality grills :eyebrows: I've been really fussy over grills since owning Magnum K's... They have quilting between the plywood frame & cloth it looks a lot classier IMO.

I know, I'm sad

I'm a bit of a "Quadaholic": I have two 303s, two 405s, two pairs of 50Es, a 520f plus 33 and 44 preamps. Not to mention the AM1, AM3, FM2, FM3 and FM4 tuners. (And of course the (still) divine '57 ESL speakers.)

The 50Es are 'bomb proof' and can be used with a whole range of speaker impedances. Most importantly, they can be adapted to have a 600Ohm balanced input.
Soundwise, they're not too bad, but given they were designed in the mid '60s, are hardly state-of-the-art these days.

Agree re 303 vs. 50Es. True, British Rail did use many 50Es, as did the BBC and several recording studios such as Abbey Road. My 50Es are ex-BBC.

An excellent amplifier and one I use with the TV. So I'm listening to Glastonbury through B&W DM2a speakers via a 520f amplifier. Mine came from nice chap called Chris (living somewhere deep in a forest)!

The sound reinforcement at the House of Commons and at the House of Lords use single channel Quad 510 amplifiers.

The Kingsdales are basically the follow-up model to the Wharfedale Rosedale, although I believe there was a gap between the end of Rosedale production and the release of the Kingsdale. These are much along the same lines as the Goodmans Magister and no doubt have a similar beefy presenation. I'd expect these to be good fun!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321137438072?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

L Cao, full range 8" drivers. I'd been considering a pair for months and this was the last pair left, so it had to be done.

They are a development of the fifties Mitsubishi Diatone speaker design. These are better known in the US and seem to have a bit of a cult following. Quality is regarded as very good. The optional use, equalisation filter is probably not needed in horn enclosures, which tend to correct for upper mid forwardness, as per Lowther. I just hope these sound less coloured than the Lowthers I've used.

Here's a link to some discussion of the driver:

I gather there is now a field coil variant of these being made. Could be interesting!

The radial ribbing is due to the cone construction. The cones are built up from strips of doped paper/material.

I've heard a pair of the earlier field coil versions in a large open baffle that were paired with radial horns and I was amazed at how fast fast and detailed the bass lines were. They are also quite a large driver at 19".

Well I suppose it's better than scrapping them. I've put new surrounds on speakers with very acceptable results. Those Heybrooks look as though they may have been done right and I suppose it's up to the individual to decide whether they're worth the asking price. Not that I'd pay that much for them myself.

Just got myself another interesting little bargain. A pair of late sixties 8" Eagle A-7 full range drivers. These were actually made by Coral for Eagle and are of high quality. I got a reduction on the postage, so the pair cost me less than £18! Nice.

Geoff, the ebay seller you bought those from has an interesting trading name - 'iamnotgoingtoconformtoyourrequirements' !!

What a mess! These are a complete 'bastard' in every sense of the word. Total horrors.

The compression driver ripped off the back of a Tannoy DC, old unmatched bass drivers, nasty piezo tweeters, a big hole in the front and terminals on the baffle, all in what may have been Ditton 44 cabinets. God knows what they sound like.

I'm fond of Stereo 20 amps. Strange how the output transformer seems to have swelled internally and pushed the impedance matching socket plate upwards. Bituminous potting on these if I'm correct.

No, on the 6 1/2" doped paper cone bass/mid driver. It was a two way design with a 3/4" soft dome tweeter (Peerless I believe).

Mordaunt Short had a variety of models in the early seventies, but the only use of the B200 I recall was I believe in the MS737, which had two in each cabinet with a Decca London ribbon tweeter at the top. Lovely speaker!

The only British speaker I can think of from that time with similar drivers and a mid unit that rotted out is the early IMF Compact/Super Compact.

Maybe.
For the exact kit value hopefully some other replies also look on Ebay for "Completed" for each piece of kit
For a working system you can get a lot cheaper if prepared to wait.
The system I got for £60 was very similar value with more kit, possibly not quite such good sound quality
In the UK systems like that can go for buttons or even be given away
Would have thought Ireland was similar

For price "Collect only" is great in the UK. You can also hear it working !

I know mike but I haven't been back to England for 7 years so wouldn't be able to collect or listen.

Maybe Ireland is more like the EU than the UK. Second hand prices out here are scandalous. Most of the Brits out here seem to shop in the UK or eBay when buying anything second hand.

I suppose it is Gordon. Are you in France?

I suppose it is Gordon. Are you in France?

Yup, seven years now. Still don't speak the language properly:(. I spent all my time until I retired, working for the Brits!@! Poor excuse. generally, prices are rising as everywhere. My two areas of expenditure are music and tools. Both of which are bought on-line. When we came here it was cheap. No more. sadly, the Euro is going the wrong way at the moment as well so the pension is going down rather than up. Rats:doh:

Yes I can remember France being good value but family have said it is getting pricier. There was a time when I would buy music and chainsaws in France!

Parents have said food is going up too.

I haven't been back to France for about thirteen years.

Nice to see how easy it is! It is amazing, i wish it was this easy to put together a decent system for so little when i was a kid!

I have to agree. That Audax tweeter was a real cheapie which always sounded veiled in every speaker I heard it. Whenever it was replaced with something better, the speaker took several paces forward in terms of performance.

What did surprise me was that the RR1 retailed for £799 in 2001. I'd expected it to be cheaper with that tweeter.

Couldn't agree more... Royd probably modified it somehow as with every tweeter they used but you cant make a silk purse from a sow's ear !

That whole review/specification page looks iffy at best... Reviewer states sensitivity is 87dB yet the specs say 83dB, reviewer states metal dome tweeter used yet pictures show the dreaded Audax POS & then there's the frequency response ! 28hz@-3dB from a 5" driver in a baby floorstander ? Somewhat doubtful

Tannoy DC200, the Tannoy to avoid. A friend of mine had a pair and on his system and on mine (both decent systems by the way), these sounded flat, coloured and lacking any proper dynamics. I'd imagine the smaller DC100 has similar problems.

The compact Tannoy to buy. System 800, these sound wonderful. I've had a couple of pairs. They are really professional nearfield monitors, but sound sublime in a H-Fi system. At 94db efficiency they'll work with just about any amplifier (great with valves) and have 180watts power handling (they can go very loud).
