http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Thorens-TD-160-B-MK-II-Turntable-Record-Deck-/181130589524?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&nma=true&si=iYKlTfLeVV7H8Tf6%252BRdlZ%252F5xP0o%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

Underneath that horrible ADC ALT1 arm is an SME type mount, which will take one of my Mission 774 arms, nice!

I reckon the ALT1 will fetch about £80 on eBay and the accompanying Ortofon FF15 cartridge maybe £20, meaning I've (hopefully) got a decent TD160B for around £80. Not too bad. It'll be a back up TT.

I believe these are the same model that fronted the cheap as chips system at Scalford in 2012 - I was listening when Graham comes in sits down and after listening for about a minute turns to me and says 'what the f..K are these speakers?' Some of the comments I overheard were quite amusing, one middle aged couple sat behind me, she leans over to him and says 'This only cost £100 - how much have you spent?' He had his head in his hand. Someone should snap these things up pronto.

Looks like someone has snapped these up pronto :( Now SOLD

This has worked out even better than expected. The seller was a nice chap and had dug out all the original boxes & paperwork for the arm, cartridge and TT and also included a packaged 'Platter Matter' mat, very nice. All items in very good condition. Chuffed!

Ah now that's different , looks lots better as a set , :)

I asked about that Denon a while back on the Yahoo tuner group and the info I got back was that it might sound good on a strong signal but the sensitivity is relatively poor. The other specs are the same as the TU-1500RD IIRC. So a TU-800L would be a better bet IMO.

Just won this. Don't laugh but it uses the same turntable as the 'RP1500' i was wanting a spare motor, strobe light & another one of those arms (i rewired yesterday on the vintage rebuild topic), the platter & bearing can go on my DIY RCM, so i guess it was a bargin' enough for me..the rest of it can go to the tip.

Aye, they are a sweet little amp, and really are Class A up to their rated output power (which isn't much, probably around 7 w/ch. or so, maybe a bit more with a tail wind). I believe the more modern ones still use the same circuit, just have more power, which means they got it right in the first place!

I have one tucked away in the cupboard. They are going up in price if that is the going rate now. Still good value even so IMHO.

Let these idiots spend too much money on out of spec crap far removed from an ideal example and smile smugly to ourselves that it's highly likely that you'd get a better sound from a modern £200pr Chinese made speaker and an incomparably better sound from the modern Stirlings or Harbeths (Spendor had their chance and blew it with stodge-boxes, although the SA1 series 2 is better I believe).

I've seen it before... If others are selling a similar item to yours bid them all up to stupidly high amounts then bidders will be attracted to yours which are still at a sane price or yours also get bid to a stupidly high price 'cos the bidders thought that's now the going rate.... Or something like that anyway.

Seems like an awful lot of effort to me  but these are hard times people are getting desperate. I've noticed a lot of eBay users have become more cut throat recently.

There isn't a sane genuine buyer in this world that would pay this price. The new improved versions Sterling Broadcast make cost a fraction of this. The standard ones sounded pretty unimpressive to me back in the day.

There seems to be much misunderstanding about these speakers and, as a consequence, an awful lot of hype and cult status has followed.

First it must be understood that the speaker was designed by the BBC, as they were looking for a near field monitor that could be used in their OB television control-rooms.

The BBC document: BBC RD 1976/29 "The design of the miniature monitoring loudspeaker type LS3/5A" by H.D. Harwood, M. E. Whatton and R. W. Mills (available on the web) makes this clear.

Quoting from the introduction:

"There is a need to monitor sound programme quality in circumstances where space is at a premium and where headphones are not considered satisfactory. Such circumstances include the production-control section of a television mobile control-room, where the producer responsible for the overall production of the programme needs to monitor the output from the sound mixer but at lower levels than those used for mixing." (The emphasis is mine)

Despite using the KEF B110 unit in a small enclosure, the loudspeaker has a response that is substantially uniform down to 100Hz. In the design the bass unit is overdamped.

Measurements made at a distance of 1.5m (a typical listening distance for a near field design) and at a SPL of 70dB show a response flat to +/- 5dB. Distortion measurements were made at an SPL of 88dB (ref. threshold of hearing). This gives an idea of the sound pressure levels expected.

It is thus to be expected that the LS3/5A will not necessarily be a good choice for the average living/listening room when the listener is sitting 3 - 4m away from the speakers and is wanting loud listening levels and an extended bass performance.

They are a good speaker, but have gathered too much hype and mistique by the ill-informed, and because of that their second-hand value has become disproportionate. £1000 for a pair in excellent condition is probably reasonable given the close tolerance on unit-to-unit variation. But as has been said, the new Stirling Broadcast speakers are a better bet for anyone looking for an LS3/5A type speaker design (and the latter design has been approved by the BBC as an LS3/5A substitute).

Odd indeed, cos I've clicked on that dodgy link 5 times and I now have it showing on 5 tabs in G Chrome.

Here's some of the text from it:
The sound department were also responsible for the communications facilities, which included many wired and radio talkback circuits, from all departments to operators, and also feeds of programme sound to monitors. The Sound Control area is always separate, as it requires acoustical insulation from the production and engineering areas.

A Mobile Control Room therefore had to contain a Sound Control Room, Production Control Room, and Vision Control area. In some cases the Vision Engineers were positioned lower down, under the viewing line of the production staff, in the same area. Another area could be designated the Vision Apparatus or Central Apparatus Room, following studio practice.

I think so - but very hard to find an actual picture - this is a 3D rendering (http://www.vincejennings.webspace.virginmedia.com/RamElectronics/early.html) of the 3 - main difference being two ports on the actual ebay ones vs one on the rendering and different placement.

Oh, and one other thing - the seller says the top Bass units have been replaced with units from a KEF Coda (iii he thinks) but the top ones look right to me (KEF B200) - I would personally replace the bottom 2 with another pair of B200s as they should have been originally.

I'm pretty sure RAMs always used Dalesford units, so it probably is the upper unit that has been changed if its a KEF now.

You're right - he was referring to a prototype that used B200s.

"The RAM3 used the same units as the RAM2, which was a scaled down version. This was designed before the RAM2, and derived from the first speaker I ever made, which used two KEF B200's for base units, and, whilst sounding good, had an awful impedance curve (two 8 ohm units in parallel) that some amps at the time didn't like."

I got mine in 1989 Shane and the reason I have kept it is it faithfully reproduces the dynamics and grip of what you feed in. When you use a ferric tape you miss a bit of detail and top-end - but it doesn't really matter as the dynamics are there.

It has Dolby B and C and DBX noise reduction but I never bother with any. It doesn't have bias adjustment. Not sure if the next model up had it.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audiomaster-loudspeakers-/171042512470?pt=UK_AudioVideoElectronics_HomeAudio HiFi_HiFiSpeakers&hash=item27d2ed9e56

For this kind of money these are likely to be a bit of a bargain soundwise. They need a tidy though!

Pioneer HPM-60 speakers in tidy condition. They have the same kind of dynamic punch as the JBL speakers of their time and are equally well made. Very nice.

Minters from the look of it. If he was just down the road instead of out in the wilds of Wales I would be having them no question.

You're spending FAR too much time here Alex. You should be elsewhere Rega-Shilling at every conceivable moment. I even gave you the chance when I mentioned my Sony amp and you let it pass by. Ya slipping Alex. Ya slipping.

Nice! Should go for around £200 I reckon... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251277145215?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Be warned though, if its not been serviced it will need to be before regular use. These suffer from serious component degradation.

I've had one. Alright as a collectable I suppose, but the sound was pretty ordinary.

Mine sounded fantastic with AR3a's ... Until it died ! The preamplifier stage is always powered so all the capacitors were knackered in them by 1980 nevermind now.

Just won these Tannoy Lynx speakers for £360. Basically the same drivers as the SRM12X if I'm not mistaken and they are a hard edged version of the 3128 driver used in my Cheviot II speakers. Should be nice! Only local too.

His friends call him - SPEAKERMAN!!

Yes, I do have a thing about speakers. Using, buying, modifying, renovating and building! Often Tannoys, I admit.

By the way, the Lynxes will be robbed of their drivers and crossovers and then the cabinets dumped!
