I love the sound of a record deck on its own. The lovely hiss of the bearing...

Actually, I started out with my first 'Hi-Fi' (when I was 14) when my cousin gave me his Garrard SP25 MkIII/Goldring G800. I didn't have an amp or speakers, but went out and bought a copy of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" (their latest release at the time) and sat there with my ear as close as possible to the stylus, listening to it over and over again. The amp and speakers followed a few months later - an Amstrad EX-220 and Solavox PR25 (actually Wharfedale Dentons re-badged as Comet's own brand).

Back then Metrosound were a speaker manufacturer, before they got into electronics. Wonder what happened to them. There was Keletron too, who sold a big range of speakers. EMI were turning out decent speakers (and some crappy ones) and of course Eagle!

That's the only nice thing about it... Horrid blingly pishanto! I detest that Jap 'faux rosewood' look with a passion - and then to make matters worse, they stick a bloody GOLD platter on it, just in case it's not fooking BRIGHT enough as it is...!!

Now if the plinth were in a gorgeous piano black, and the platter were finished in nice polished stainless-steel (or matt black), then we'd be talking!! :exactly:

Marco
14-04-2013, 23:38
Bronze, shmonze, it still looks 'gold', muchacho - and I hate gold anywhere near a turntable, and on that T/T it totally clashes with that yucky 'rosewood'. If you observe my avatar, that's how I like a T/T to look...

Ignore the fact that it's a Techy or that it's mine. That's not my point, but you'll notice that, apart from the pitch control lights (which I'll do away with at some point), the look is sombre and rather understated, which I consider as classy and elegant. I hate things that look too bright or 'showy'!

World's first! According to the spec, these speakers operate down to DC.

Acoustic suspension? I'll bet Amstrad wouldn't even know what that this is. Surely only AR used that technique (where the air provides part of the driver's spring suspension and requires a totally sealed box).

Allen & Heath are good mixing console.

I owned three Series One Studiomaster consoles a 12-2, 16-4 & 16-8, bit hissy but i loved them, no tiny twiggly knobs or LED VU's with these babies ;) I wish i'd still got my Analog Synth studio..

So rare now, B&W DM1 speakers in lovely condition.

A true landmark product, the first proper (British) compact domestic monitor. These brought professional nearfield monitoring sound quality to the domestic market (and many studios). Rated as the best small speaker ever made in their day.

Mine have a "rattle" on one of the EMI eliptical drivers, otherwise I'd still be using them :( - they are indeed superb and surprised a set that nice didn't go for more.

Xapito
23-04-2013, 14:00
I bet I know what that rattle is, 1 of 2 things:

1 - look "inside" the voice coil and try to shake the speaker itself or the driver only. You probably have something inside the gap in that central aluminium dust cap. Probably a smallish broken piece of plastic.

2 - Rotate the mid/bass driver, you can try to see if there's a broken suspension in the spider and that would smooth things up.

Go and try this, they are fantastic!

I think that's the PP4.

I owned the similar PP2, The Cambridge is still far better, I bought a 640P from Richer Sounds years ago and was amazed how good it was for the £69 quid I paid. An absolute bargain soundwise.

I must have tried just about every phono stage that was on the market a few years ago. The ProJect Tube Box SE was a let down, but the Bellari VP-129 was a little cracker! The EAR 834P was sweet enough, but over-rated and now way overpriced second hand. I've since stuck with the superb Graham Slee ERA Gold V, which easily beats the lot of them. I may move up to a Reflex one day.

Wow !! add a pair of 15'inch JBL bass units per cab(nobody does bass better than JBL's) and you've got something extraordinary.

Don't forget Altec made some fantastic bass drivers. Or, something from Vitavox would be nice.

Yes Geoff,

Working on it for a pair of Altec's or Vita's someday, i'll just have to be biased to my more *common* JBL coned speakers for the time being,

I think I'll have a couple of kilos worth and if I like them them, I'll top them up later.
Maybe they could offer Pick 'n Mix, that way I could try a couple of kg of amp too!

They do crop up on eBay. I'd guess a near mint pair of 12" Twin Axioms could go for as much as £150 to £250 maybe. Nice enough speaker, but I'd sooner have a pair of Wharfedale Super 10 RSDD's.

Adam Beobloke will like them, worth noting that:

'There will be no long drawn out bidding war or snipping opportunities'

The lack of a 'snipping' opportunity may dissuade some people, I think. You can't beat the occasional bit of opportunistic snipping imo.

Hi Martin - it was a pair of RAM 150s I had at Scalford, so these should be even better! £60 is an absolute give-away - I echo that someone should give these a go smartish! (I still smile after the multiple conversations I had at Scalford with loads of people - including one guy who (I shit you not, though he may have been shitting me!) said he had a £30k system and wanted it to sound more like the C.A.C. system! Yes, but the output transformers can be troublesome if someone been a bit merry with them over the years..

I've owned several, including the integrated model. They sound sweet enough, but no comparison with the Leak Stereo 20 for instance. The Rogers are probably worth buying at that price, but not much more. They'll be gone soon, somebody will grab them.

Hmm I'm torn as they're in nice cosmetic condition but I just bought a nice Quad 33/303 pair so can't really justify them.

Apparently these speakers are rare. Whatever they are.

Today's "Oh dear" item (I mentioned this lot last time it was listed).

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stereo-speakers-fuse-board-and-others-/251268063126?pt=UK_AudioVideoElectronics_HomeAudio HiFi_HiFiSpeakers&hash=item3a80be5f96

Apparently "stereo speakers" but only one speaker set is shown and listed. No make quoted, rotted bass surround and a crossover is now seemingly called a "fuse board"!

Whaddya reckon - did I get a bargain (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SONY-STEREO-HIFI-SYSTEM-Retro-1970s-STR-6036-TC-186SD-and-speakers-Original-/151034713516?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&nma=true&si=o%252B0aRucpjRxctYXOAXIG%252B3gl568%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc)? Did you notice what I noticed, about those crappy old 70s Sony speakers??? :eyebrows:

God knows what I'm going to do with it all (apart from add the cassette deck to my Retro system in the spare room) but that's not the point, is it? :D

Well, that's a B&W badge on the back - Sony sold rebadged DM1's (I have a pair) and DM3's I believe - however, these don't look like DM3's now I look again - I thought they might be DM5's - but the bass driver looks too high - so I'm not sure now, but they are definitely rebadged B&W's - interesting.

Anyone else got a clue? (They're not D5's either, the driver is too high in the baffle on D5's I think. They don't look deep enough to be DM4's. Confused, I am, but will be fun playing with this little lot!)

Just for comparison - here are the Sony's from the auction:

http://i.ebayimg.com/t/SONY-STEREO-HIFI-SYSTEM-Retro-1970s-STR-6036-TC-186SD-and-speakers-Original-/00/s/NTU1WDU2Mw==/z/UYcAAOxyPLpRej~g/$(KGrHqRHJEEFE3pBHFFGBRej+g!eUg~~60_12.JPG

Here are a pair of D5's - you can see the similarity on the back and the label:

Oh, well spotted! That badge definitely came from them. You'll need to do some investigation, perhaps it's a common driver set in a slightly different configuration.

Do you think they're trying to catch someone out?

"Technics 1200 - MK2 motor, main board screws."

Are they selling the main board and motor, or just the screws?

$19 courier fee, plus buyer pays postage on returns?

Hope I'm not being too cynical in my old age......:)
